MU 10th in AP poll

Feb. 9, 2009 2:05 p.m.

The Marquette Golden Eagles' 57-56 upset loss at South Florida on Friday didn't cost them all that much in the Associated Press' media poll on Monday.

MU, poised to rise higher than eighth for the first time since 1978 had it been able to beat USF, instead dropped just spots to No. 10.

The Golden Eagles (20-3, 9-1 Big East) were one of four teams in the top eight to have suffered a loss last week; No. 5 Louisville was beaten by No. 1 Connecticut and remained fifth; No. 6 Duke lost at Clemson and dropped two spots from No. 4; and No. 7 Wake Forest lost to Miami and remained seventh.

Memphis and Michigan State moved up to Nos. 8 and 9, respectively, with a pair of victories apiece.

UConn remained No. 1 for the second consecutive week, while fellow Big East member Pittsburgh rose two spots to No. 4. Villanova, MU's next opponent, jumped four spots to No. 13, and Syracuse dropped to No. 23.

MU plays two games this week: at Villanova at 6:30 on Tuesday night, and against St. John's at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Bradley Center.
