I think if you look at their schedule and who they lost too it makes sense.  take a bunch of those pretenders...ie Minnesota and give them ND or Gtowns schedule and they would have an even worse record....I know Minny beat Loserville my point stands.  The coaches polls tend to be based more on how good a team is and the AP more on record.  Would not be surprised if ND and GT fall further in the AP>

loserville got us by 9 votes.

8 Big East teams, 4 in top 10, but almost no support for West Virginia.  I think they're every bit as good as the lowest three ranked Big East teams.
