MU jumps to eighth

Jan. 26, 2009 3:15 p.m.

South Bend, Ind. -- The Marquette Golden Eagles jumped three spots in the Associated Press' media poll on Monday afternoon, from 11th to eighth.

MU (17-2, 6-0 Big East), which has won nine straight games and is one of just two undefeated teams in the Big East Conference, takes on Notre Dame at 6 tonight.

Some view this game as a chance for MU to 'legitimize' itself and its 6-0 record in the league, considering the best teams they've beaten to this point are Villanova and West Virginia.

Not surprisingly, Golden Eagles players don't agree with that view.

"I don’t care about it at all," said Jerel McNeal. "Keep talking about what they’re talking about. As long as we keep taking it one game at a time and getting wins, what are they going to say at the end of the year?

"We’re not concerned about that at all. In this type of conference every win that you get is a big win, regardless of whether everybody else wants to admit that or not. We know that."

Meanwhile the Fighting Irish (12-6, 3-4), on the heels of two losses, dropped out of the poll this week. They had been ranked 19th.

MU's No. 8 ranking matches the highest ever for this current group of seniors; the Golden Eagles rose as high as eighth on Nov. 28, 2006, after they beat Duke in the championship game of the CBE Classic in Kansas City.
