MU rises to 11th in poll

Jan. 19, 2009

In first place and one of just two undefeated teams in the Big East Conference, the Marquette Golden Eagles on Monday rose to No. 11 in the Associated Press media poll.

MU (16-2, 5-0), which was ranked 14th last week, has now won eight straight games for the first time since Jan. 10-Feb. 7 in the 2006-'07 season after posting a 91-82, come-from-behind victory at Providence on Saturday.

The No. 11 ranking is the highest for MU since it checked in at No. 10 on Dec. 31, 2007.

The Golden Eagles next host DePaul at 1 p.m. Saturday, when they'll be going for the first 6-0 conference start in school history.

In other MU news, Florida State was named on Monday as the eighth and final team for the 2009-'10 Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla.

Joining MU and Florida State in the field are Alabama, Baylor, Creighton, Iona, Michigan and Xavier.

The tournament takes place during Thanksgiving week at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex.
