I have always followed the beleive that excuses are for losers.  In an earlier string much was discussed about all the "obstacles" that our former coach had to over coming in recruiting.  The constant media speculation that he would not be here long was apparently the big "reason" he signed one good recruitng class in the past 6 years.  The constant drone of other school's coaches telling potential MU recruits that Crean would never see them graduate was the "excuse" why Crean signed such horrendous classes in 2002 and 2003 and after despite them going to the Final Four  and Crean signing a long term deal.  I guess that is a "theory", but it seems to me the same type of speculation from the media and stuff like that goes on with coaches in recruitng everywhere, unless that coach is at a perennial top 10 type school, ala Kentucky, Duke, etc.  So maybe it is a valid "point" however it is no different for a coach anywhere else.

But it leads one to think how can other coaches then possibly get it done.  How does MArk few continue to recruit at Gonzaga?  My good ness how does and does billy Donovan continue or did continue with all the rumors and all his success at Florida?

Meanwhile up in Milwaukee at little old Marquette sat a new coach.  The national media heck even the local media and fan message boards said he should have never gotten the job.  That the fact that he did showed it was just a stepping stone school.  Many stated that if he could not win with this team he should be let go after 1 year, or at least in short order.  One coach in New Jersey, maybe the most famous high school coach in America made a national media spectacle calling out Buzz William's lack of experience and stating he could not see sending one of his players there.  I think there was a Buzz article in every sports publication about how he was a nobody.  Surely every other opposing coach made statements to MU recruits that this guy was unproven, did nothing and ran from UNO, would never see him graduate and everything else.  Yet low and behold Buzz made no "excuses" and went out and signed MU's best recruitng class in 25 years!!  Excuses are for losers!!  Git 'er done!!

Not to play devil's advocate here, but who's to say Buzz doesn't jump ship to A&M or some other school in 4 years if there is an opening?

If that happens hayward will be able to come up with all kinds or reasons he sucked.

If Buzz takes a job with a Texas college team......his name won't have been linked every opening for years, no one will be shocked because he is actually from there, he won't have spent years cultivating the idea that in invented BB at MU, chances are he will have shown he can recruit and develop bigs, he may talk to his team first, rather than having them find out via ESPN ticker or some local journalist asking them cold, on his way out, he will probably acknowledge everything MU did for him.     And historically, I am a Crean fan.

Yes, Buzz has done a great job recruiting his first class, but before we make him the second coming of Al, let's see if he can follow that up with a second and third class.  OBTW how about we wait and see if he can coach!  He has not won a game yet!  Do we all have to drink the Hope Change Hope Change Kool-Aid!!!!

Go MU!

well at least if he does leave in 4 years people wont have to come on and defend his suck ass recruitng by calling players like Chrsitopherson "outstanding".

oh by the way i met and liked Majerus, Dukiet, oneil and Deane, liked them all may have not been happy with their success or lack of it at times but always liked them as people.  hated crean not long after he got here. Pure a-hole and no where near as good as he and others think he is.

And yet, still incredibly childish.

I am extremely excited by what Buzz has done, recruiting wise. That said, before we call him a better recruiter than Crean (and he may very well be one), let's see what he can do when he does not have a ton of playing time to sell.

Buzz had lots of PT to sell to recruits in the 09 class. PT is a GREAT recruiting tool. In fact, it is so great a tool that Tom Crean, whom some would blindly call a shoddy recruiter, was able to recruit arguably the greatest single recruiting class in Marquette history - the DJ, McNeal, Matthews, Burke class. At the very least, it will end up as one of the most productive classes in MU history.

Who will Buzz land in 2010, when the 2009 kids are super sophomores? Who will he land in 2011? 2012? We'll wait and see. Until I see those results, I might just refrain from proclaiming him a recruiting demi-god. Perhaps some on this board would be wise to do so as well.

Ding Ding Ding Ding.

As much as I a) love Mr Hayward and b) loathe TC, PT closes recruits.  Lets see what Buzz does next year and lets see if these kids can actually play.

I am very optimistic about our future and very very excited to have Buzz as our coach but I need him to win a few games and come back with a solid, balanced 2010 class before I go crazy.  Now I love how honest and sincere he comes across at blue & gold functions, so I think we're headed in the right direction but we still need to see a second sales cycle.

Boy, the "How to Post Like an All-Star on a Fan Site Forum" self-help book* I got for my birthday is really paying off. That is two "ding ding ding" posts in a week.

*Please Note: I did not actually receive such a book recently, or ever. If such a book does exist, my statement should not be considered a testimonial to said book's effectiveness.

I think next year will be easier to recruit. Less scholarships to fill and he can be more selective. They may not be top 100 kids, but kids that have a skill we need.

One can only hope he is that successful at Marquette and at that point, do we even care?
You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

Before we anoint Buzz as a great recruiter lets see first how good of a coach he really is and then lets see how next years freshmen actually performs on the court.  The guy could really stink as a coach or worse, his highly ranked recruits could all transfer out in a year or two or just plain suck.  Nevertheless, it will be extremely disappointing if we are not in the top 6 this year with the players we have.

I am looking forward to seeing Buzz coach his first game tomorrow and hoping for the best against an extremely overmatched opponent.

Wow, top six - do you mean the  recruiting class or the team in the polls?  I think either way would be very optimistic, but I would love it.  I am anxious for this season to get underway to see what they are capable of on the floor.  Here's to a solid performance by the guys today - and Coach Buzz - and an injury-free game.

Actually top 6 in conference and that is not an optimistic view point in that we have done it the past 3 years and have lost very little if anything from last year.  Espeicially if you believe the hype of Fulce and that he will make a significant contribution this year compared to what we received from Fitz from last year.

mufanatic - I'm definitely on board with top six in Big East. I guess I haven't had my second cup of coffee this morning and wasn't thinking straight.
