Jake Nelp Joins Marquette Men's Basketball Staff
Milwaukee - Marquette University head men's basketball coach Buzz Williams has announced the addition of Jake Nelp to the staff as the program's basketball technology assistant.
Nelp will assist in the day-to-day operations of the office, focusing his efforts on opponent scouting and film exchange while also helping to ensure the Golden Eagles keep pace with the ever-changing technology demands of the industry.
"The evolution of basketball technology has increased tenfold over the last five years, and it was critical in the formation of our staff to have a member who was on the cutting edge of that technology," Williams said. "I have known Jake for the last eight years, and without question, his talent in this area is unmatched. His expertise will allow our players and staff the absolute best opportunity to learn more about ourselves and our opponent."
Nelp arrives in Milwaukee after spending the 2007-08 campaign as the video coordinator for the University of Arkansas women's basketball team. The first person to hold the position in a full-time role, Nelp assisted in the day-to-day needs of the program in regards to opponent scouting.
"This is a vital position, yet, a difficult position to hire, because your talent must be wide-ranging," Williams said. "Jake's experience on and off the floor allow him to fulfill my desires from the position perfectly. He will have a direct impact on everyone associated with our program."
Prior to Arkansas, the Indiana native served for two seasons as an assistant coach with the men's basketball team at Indiana Wesleyan. IWU posted a 30-5 record en route to an NAIA Elite Eight appearance and was ranked as high as third in the country. The Wildcats posted back-to-back school records for conference victories and he was tabbed the top NAIA assistant coach by INBNews.com.
A 2001 graduate of Colorado State with a bachelor's degree in history, Nelp worked with the men's program at CSU as both a student assistant (1999-2002) and the director of basketball operations (2003-04). During his tenure with the Rams he worked with both Williams and current assistant Dale Layer, who was CSU's head coach.
He also owns international experience, having worked as an assistant to the general manager for the 08 Stockholm Human Rights Basketball Club during the 2002-03 campaign.
Nelp's wife, Angie, was a collegiate standout at CSU and currently serves as a graduate assistant with Arkansas.
