MU trustees to meet

Written by: Don Walker

Marquette University's Board of Trustees are scheduled to meet on Friday to discuss the decision by Tom Crean to go to Indiana University, and what the school's athletic department is doing to find his replacement.

Kremlin-watchers, no doubt, will say this means the school is closing in on a new men's basketball coach. Maybe yes, maybe no.

In the meantime, Crean made a few comments today on Dan Patrick's syndicated radio program. He told Patrick that his first contact with Indiana came a few days ago. "It moved very fast," Crean said.

"This came out of the absolute blue," Crean said.

Crean also said he was still juggling his emotions in terms of dealing what he had left behind at Marquette. He said he was still having a hard time with that.

You know, it'd be nice if there was one reporter in the state, or hell, anywhere, that would have the guts to do a little more digging around about this situation instead of buying every one of Crean's lies hook, line, and sinker.

Unfortunately, Dan Patrick might as close as we get, since unlike every one with the Eastern Seaborne Programming Network, no one's got the guts to call out Crean.
The General has taken on a new command.

No kidding the reporter on WTMJ was in love with Crean.

Over on another board, "insiders" are saying MU and the administration knew on Sunday and were only "caught flat footed" that he took the job so quickly, not that he was offered it.  Just saying....maybe there are a lot more items to the story that haven't come out yet.

Chicos--Were these Crean "insiders" or MU "insiders?  The TC spin tour is out, tongiht starting with the WTMJ interview after the Patrick black eye.  Thanks

Actually I read it last night, before the Patrick interview this morning.  As I said, I have no idea if it's true....there will be a lot of different versions that will come out.  Probably won't truly know for quite some time.

But if you guys want to find out, sick Gery Woelfel on him....he hates him already so he would dig it up.

I find it hard to believe that MU administration knew about this on Sunday and that Cottingham and Cords and Wild are all in airplanes when it is released and Cottingham is forced to get off one plane to return to Milwaukee.  Crean's timeline is BS.  Izzo does not say that he advised Crean on Sunday.  He says he knew about Crean to Indiana on Sunday.  Big difference.

Yeah, lots of questions about the timeline, etc.

Mike McCarthy and Izzo and whoever else talk about advising Crean a bit ago with the implication that this wasn't as "sudden" as he wants us to believe.

He claims over and over and over and over that no one ever ever ever offered him another position ever, completely contradicting Jim Boylan's comments.

Is Doc going to be there?

Sound advice
Celtics coach Doc Rivers, a former Marquette star who is now on the school's board of trustees, said he advised basketball coach Tom Crean "to go with his heart" before he decided to leave Marquette to coach at Indiana. "Obviously, I don't love it," Rivers said. "But Tom's been fantastic. He is a very close friend. I talked to him [recently]. It's a tough loss for us and a great gain for Indiana."

Uhhh .... so Doc Rivers knew about this and was/is a member of the BOT .... but didn't think to tell the rest of the freaking Administration or his team?!

There's something missing here .....

The version I heard, because of course we all "know a guy who knows a guy...," is that Cottingham is PISSED and that the athletic department had no clue whatsoever that this might happen now.  I tend to believe it, because otherwise why is he on a plane to Colorado?  If he even had a whiff that this might happen he never would have boarded a plane, women's Final Four or not.

The BoT meeting today ..

" to discuss the decision by Tom Crean to go to Indiana University, and what the school's athletic department is doing to find his replacement...Kremlin-watchers, no doubt, will say this means the school is closing in on a new men's basketball coach. "

Umm .. the BoT doesn't meet for grins and chuckles.  They meet to make decisions.  No way are they meeting to decide "how" the athletic dept is conducting the search.  No way are they meeting to decide whether to press TC/IU hard to get $$$ for breech.    They meet to discuss huge issues, including things like ratifying the salary of the highest paid University employee.

The only other alternative I can think of is .. ratifying the ceiling of a theoretical contract, i.e., how much will the BoT ratify later.

I would think this points to the BoT meeting is to hire a coach today.

Obviously, they can have more than one item on the agenda, and I think both of the above are viable, so Cottinghame/Wilde know exactly what they have to work with. I would be happy if they are in fact closing in on a decision this quickly I would take that as nothing but a good sign - so long as it is not Buzz Williams after only a couple days.

Might they be meeting, in part at least, to discuss how to approach the "negotiations" with IU regarding the buyout and possible tampering associated with their hiring of Crean?

anybody know what time this meeting is?

That's what their legal department does .. with some oversight from Fr. Wild.  No way does that get to the BoT.

SERocks

I truly hope the board is not meeting to give their input as to who the next coach should be.  Hire good people and let them do their job.  This is Cottingham's job.  Board of Trustees giving their opinion on this matter shows me they do not have faith in him to do the job.  He is working with some good people, and if the reports are correct getting input from sources he should be getting input from.  The Board is not one of those sources in my opinion.  Might as well form a search committee if that is why they are meeting.

I hope they are meeting to discuss the potential contract issues that arose from Indiana hiring Crean away, and nothing else.

I beg to differ. Depending on exactly what they do, it could potentially become a contentious issue, and a big deal. There is no way something like this does NOT get to the BoT. Not saying it necessarily gets to this point, but they may need to be prepared for an eventuality something like this...

CHARLESTON, W.Va. - West Virginia University's Board of Governors has sued former football coach Rich Rodriguez Thursday to collect a $4 million buyout of his contract with the school.

The Man in Gold

Let's hope this is the BOT meeting to examine Cottingham's progress and hopefully agree on the Budget available to sign a new coach.  Cottingham can't spend that kind of cash without some high level approvals, so it seems likely that that would be the major topic.

Anybody know when this meeting is going down? And when we might hear something about it?

I heard they are meeting to discuss whether or not to auction off the hyperbaric chamber and the tanning booth to raise money for the new coach's buy out.
