Quote from: swoopem on November 21, 2025, 08:22:27 AMMe and my friends do a golf trip every year. Next year we're doing Arcadia and then in 2027 trying to do sand valley. My friend who organizes it reached out to sand valley for availability a couple weeks ago and hasn't heard back. I know they're busy and it's tough to book but is this normal? Any idea how long it actually takes to get a response?

I typically get a response within a day from Sand Valley but haven't tried booking a trip there since reaching out in August of last year

Wouldn't surprise me if they were moving to a lottery system like Bandon Dunes.  I had to win the lottery to get the opportunity to get a stay and play there.

Weird. Ok, thanks. He reached out again the other day so hopefully they respond with some weekend options

Bandon is awesome. Enjoy

Looking forward to it.  Sand Valley is the same.  Can't wait to get back and play The Commons and Sedge.  Walked part of Sedge last summer when it opened and it sure felt like the best of the layouts and that's saying something

How cold is too cold for you to golf?

I have golfed in snow.  For me, if the course is open, I will layer up and go walk 18.

I've always thought someone's "tolerable" golf conditions pretty much mirror their personal weather preferences, especially since it's such a mental experience, relaxing and finding peace in the course or otherwise.  People who enjoy or don't mind the cold weather will bundle up and swing as long as the course is open and clear.  People who like it hot don't mind sweating through a round.

Growing up in Wisconsin I played a ton of colder weather golf in the fall when courses slashed prices after the season and junior/high school golf was in the spring so you were playing as soon as you could in March onward, which in Wisconsin can be very dicey. I didn't care for it then but it's what I knew.  Now I can't stand it. I'll eventually do a UK golf trip with my son when he's older, but I didn't clamor to do it yet when I was younger cause though I love the history and scenery, cool weather and spitting rain is my golf nightmare.

I've played rounds in sweltering heat where I chug liquids during the round and swap to a dry shirt at the turn.  I'd rather that any day than 40s/low 50s with any sort of wind. Plenty of people would disagree, but it's all preference

If it's cold, I get on my private jet and go play somewhere warm like Seminole

I can golf in the upper 30s, especially if it is sunny and minimal wind. I love how the pace of play increases in colder temps. Played today in the upper 40s which was plenty fine. What causes me to retire the clubs for the season is when permafrost sets in and the greens turn into concrete. Golf in snow? Can't fathom that. Also, I tried winter golf gloves but didn't like them. I have mittens to wear but remove them for swinging.

I remember trying to wear 2 golf gloves to stay warm and retain some feel. But I take off my golf glove to chip/putt so it was a hassle and extra time being very cold in my hands.  No thanks.

And collard greens.

Missed this news.  A character of the game unfortunately remembered as much for this quote on Tiger's '97 Masters win.  RIP

I meant to share this Fuzzy Z story earlier.  When a friend of mine was about 10 YO, attended the Greater Hartford Open (now Travelers Championship) back in the early 80's.  There was some inclimate weather and my friend saw Fuzzy and asked him if "he thought the golfers would get out today?". Fuzzy replied "The F*** if I know kid!"

Looks like the accumulated snow on the ground isn't going anywhere. Cold spell right around the corner. This will be the first December in a very long time that I don't golf at least 1-2 rounds.  :P

My good friend is from Columbus and, while not a big golf fan overall, is fanatical about The Memorial at Muirfield and has a close attachment to it.  He's in his early 40s and has went every year since probably 86.

His dad texted him after seeing Fuzzy passed and asked if my buddy remembered meeting him at the Memorial.  My buddy did not.  So his dad reminded him...when he was 7-8, they were next to a fairway as spectators and an errant drive one hopped and clipped my buddy in the thigh.  He wasn't badly hurt or crying, but was kind of dour and pouty and rubbing his leg.  The group came over and the player came up and apologized and started to assess his shot.  Well he was playing with Fuzzy who sidled up next to my buddy, patted him on the shoulder and said "you can sock me in the leg too if you want" and my buddy and his dad both giggled.  My buddy remembered the interaction but not who the player was.

The Tiger comment was and still is terrible and I have no idea if he was actually a POS racist behind closed doors, but I always heard nothing but good stories about what a approachable, affable, and charming guy he was on tour up till that point.  So who knows.

Sounds like a warm weather trip is needed.
