Jop has been extremely active defensively.  He's been a much better player this year, while shooting horrendously.  Now if that shot just comes around...

I can't help but love Jop - I think there is a lot about his game, what he's asked to do, and how he's responded that compares extremely favorably to Jeronne Maymon.

We R Final Four

Since we are talking about Jop's D.....should we mention that Shaka pulled him late in the first half for not boxing out.......on a frickin free throw!?!

Shaka should have let scoop handle it.  ;D

Per Hoop-Explorer, Marquette is 27.5 points/100 possessions better defensively with Joplin on the floor. That is by far the best of any Marquette player. Stevie is next best at 11.9 p/100.

When Joplin is on the floor, Marquette's defense gives up 86.3 points/100 possessions.

When Joplin is off the floor, Marquette's defense gives up 113.8 points/100 possessions.

That is a 27.5 point difference. Obviously other players factor in and on/off isn't a be-all end-all, but we have definitely been much better on defense when he's on the court.

From last season to this (so far), Joplin has improved in almost every statistical category (and improved markedly in most): scoring, FG%, FT%, FTA, rebounding, assists, steals, minutes.

Interestingly, the one big area that is lower is what he's most known for - 3-point shooting. But he's been on fire the last two games and hopefully his shooting slump is behind him.

With his improvement as a defender, Jop has really become a valuable player for a top-10 team. Kudos to him for his hard work, and to Shaka and the assistants for helping him improve so much.
