On Saturday night at Valley Fields the men's soccer team defeated No. 1 Georgetown (13-2, 7-2 BIG EAST), 1-0. It was the first win over the No. 1 team in the country in program history.

Prior to the win, men's soccer was 0-2 against the top ranked team in the nation with those losses coming against Creighton in 2015 and Notre Dame in 2014.

There have only been three other teams in Marquette history to beat a nationally top-ranked team. The men's basketball team beat No. 1 Kentucky in the NCAA Regional Final in 2003, men's lacrosse defeated No. 1 Denver in the BIG EAST Championship in 2016 and the men's basketball team took down top-ranked Villanova in 2017.

With Marquette's upset over Georgetown, it keeps postseason hopes alive for the Golden Eagles. If Creighton loses to Providence on Wednesday, then the Golden Eagles will make the BIG EAST Tournament.

Wow so they lived up to their preseason hype for one game?

Especially if it still gives them a postseason shot.

It likely doesn't.

Marquette failed to make the 6 team Big East Quarterfinals, even with this win.

Georgetown and Providence are the two best Big East Teams this season. St. John's, Villanova and Creighton will be trying to get invites. (Some think 2 of the 3.) Marquette is a 56 RPI with a losing record, sitting similar to Butler, not in the mix.

Louis Bennett, 16 years, 11 of those have had a losing record. He's had 3 very good NCAA Tourney seasons.

Slow program build at the beginning, many years of struggle. He made back to back NCAA Tourneys with strong seasons in 2012, 2013. Several middle of the pack Big East Seasons missing the conference tourney more than making it. He survived a rough 3 year stretch through 2017. Last year was obviously a very strong season, one of the 3 out of 16.

College Soccer is fun though. The #1 UVA at #3 Florida St. Women's game last week was a great game. Lots and lots of games on ESPN+, that aren't already on league channel tv. SEC, ACC, Pac 12 networks etc...

Anyone know if Bennett's contract is up soon? Perhaps Scholl needs to let him walk like he did Markus Roeders.

Those 12 & 13 teams were awesome and so disappointing we didn't go anywhere in the tournament.

This year is honestly the year that should probably warrant him getting the ax. I get it's a tough sport to build around and everything but man you had it all going your way and the team crapped the bed

So I've been writing about NYCFC for the last couple of years for a site called The Outfield and in 2019, they drafted Luis Barraza, former goalkeeper for Marquette, which I was incredibly pumped about a MU alum on the team I root for and write about.

I got to interview him this week about his early career, the big win against Georgetown, Real Chili vs Sobelmans, etc.
