The Lens

I loved hearing Shaka not only talk about tracking certain stats but actually putting a hard number behind it.  As goofy as TC (deflections) & Buzz (paint touches) may have sounded, we did seem like we missed having a point of emphasis with Wojo.

Does anyone have any idea on what our average deflections were in under TC, Buzz and Wojo?  Did we routinely, sometimes or never hit 32 per game?

If you get that many deflections, you win about 95% of the time or something like that.

As best Crean could break it down, a deflection is essentially any time a player does something defensively to change the course of the basketball. The following, according to Crean, all qualify as deflections:

* A tipped ball
* A steal
* A charge
* A block

Essentially the only thing Crean said doesn't count as a deflection is an off-the-backboard rebound, because it's a 50-50 situation. Deflections occur at any point in which a defender makes the basketball go in a direction other than what the offensive player had intended.

The goal for every game is 17 to 22 deflections by halftime and 35 at the end of the game. Deflection totals are written on the locker room whiteboard at halftime of every game, and sometimes are a barometer for how playing time will be apportioned in the second half.

Jerel McNeal would sometimes put himself out position chasing a deflection.

However, the key to the stat to me is deflections interrupt the other teams flow and makes them uncomfortable—few MU opponents under Wojo were ever uncomfortable.

Paint touches to me was a sign that MU was doing what it wanted to do while on offense.

We had a ton of defections under Wojo.

At least 32 per postgame presser.
Assume what I say should be in teal if it doesn't pass the smell test for you.

Coach K: Steve how many deflection did we have at the half.
Wojo: What's a deflection.

Spring 2019:
Scholl: How many defections do we have?
Wojo: At least 2.

This is good coaching IMO.

Are we counting Wojo's press conferences in his total?

32. Every game. By himself.
