I think this game showed us why we need Theo on the floor 30 minutes a game (if fouls allow).

Ed was terrible. Jayce may have even been terrible-er. I was one of the very few here who weren't thrilled or impressed when Jayce signed. He has done nothing to change my mind so far.

Other than those two, MU played very well against a good Mid-Major who played as well as possible. They made a lot of tough shots against good defensive pressure.

The one area, though, on defense that has to get better - as there will be a couple of times this year where it will be needed - is their press. It looks right now as though it is designed only as an "inconvenience" rather than as an effort to create turnovers.

NDSU had a center that played on the perimeter and did a lot of picking and popping.  This is the complete opposite of who Jayce is.  We don't want him out there chasing guys as he just isn't quick enough.  Would have loved it if we had dumped the ball into Jayce and Theo a bit more to put pressure on their big guy, but we don't do that often.

Regarding our press, we don't press to create TO's.  We press to shorten the clock and force the opponent to not get the best shot they can.  Nothing wrong at all with that philosophy.

The Bison were fine but let's not get carried away. They lost by 11 to Indiana State, 7 to Stony Brook, and 6 to Utah State and were down 2 players. They're a team that would win maybe 2 games in the BE this year.

Yes, they were still a cupcake, albeit a vegan one. Thankfully the staff had the team pretty well prepared, otherwise it could have been an ugly loss.

I understand this and realize that is the purpose. And, generally, it is a good strategy. I just would like to occasionally see a press that is designed to create turnovers. There will be a few games this year where we are trailing in the last 5 minutes and will need to get the ball.

His shooting is bad currently. But every other aspect of his game is good.

Agreed, his game is good, not great. But he will need to get better for BE play. Obviously, his shooting needs to get a lot better too.

I like Symir, too, and think he will be very good.   Last night, he lost track of his man who hit an open 3.  Then, Koby, Sacar, Markus, and Greg were playing well.

There is definitely zero need for a 2 big lineup if Bailey and Cain are both going to keep contributing really well.

I'd actually like us to try and get those guys even more involved offensive. That pull up Bailey hit to start the 2nd half is something he should be able to get multiple times a game.

And for Cain a few catch a shoot opportunities a game and maybe use his athleticism on some back door cuts into the lane.
Lazar picking up where the BIG 3 left off....

Zero concerns about Cain and Bailey.  They continue to improve and gain confidence.  Need Koby to find his jumper.   Need the bigs to start getting some put backs and catch the ball when thrown to them.   If those things happen, the ceiling for this team is very high.

Exactly!!   Jayce flat out stinks.  Anybody who thinks otherwise isn't watching.  There's a reason he got 9 minutes.  He's bad at basketball. But we won.  So right now I'll just pretend he's good

Jayce is terrible chasing around the perimeter.  He is a big body and a space eater.  I feel like he is Otule with two eyes.  No crime in that.  Be big, help on defense, grab some rebounds, get a couple put backs.  He is fine for that role.

Yep.  He's an old fashioned low post 5. And, the knee brace does not help trying to move out on the perimeter.

Marquette does not need a 30 minutes per game and a double double every night from him.

Each has had good games and poor games. I agree that Theo is more likely to give us what we need most often on the floor, but both of the others have strengths, too. I like having all those fouls to give, all those bodies to battle with opposing bigs.

And I think one of the consistent strengths Wojo has shown since becoming our coach is a good feel for which center to put in when. So I trust his decision on which 5 should get whatever minutes on a given night.
