I remember attending this game as a freshman in high school and meeting David Boone before the game. It's crazy to think that UNC had to travel after playing Duke the day before, while Marquette played Dayton.

I found the video on YouTube ...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hfYXBQUrY1A

Almost a great weekend. The joint was rocking and we had them the ropes. David Boone is one of my all time favorite Warriors. A very, very good college player.

Nukem2

Remember that one as well.  The old Arena was rocking that day.  Still bummed out by that one.

Was there.  Heartbreaking.  Program changing.  Wish we hadn't thrown pennies at them.

I remember that game as a senior... almost forgot why I don't like Kenny Smith!

Very painful memory, could've would've should've, the kid from Kohler who went to North Carolina, heartbreaking on so many levels.   I wish the team had been given the support then by the Administration that they now do.  Had they held on in that game it might have gotten them over the top and prevented several years of mediocrity.   Still, all is  good now with Tuesday's great victory.   I am hopeful it will lead to great things in the future.

geps

Interesting how the band played during live action. Wonder what the rule was then if any?

If memory serves, UNC scheduled that game because Joe Wolf was on the team as UNC would schedule an away game near the home of seniors.

Also, MU losing Joe Wolf to UNC pretty much set the (bad) tone for the latter half of the 1980s.  It marked the beginning of the end of Rick Majerus and ushered in the dark ages of Bob Dukiet.

Lastly Wolf's college announcement was carried live on local news, which was a real rarity back then (no hat dances back then).  Again if memory serves, Wolf said he did not know if he would pick MU or UNC.  It was literally a 50/50 decision and he made the final decision minutes before the announcement.

Was there also. What an atmosphere. Went to Major Goolsby's afterwards and then walking back toward campus met Dean Smith as he was walking back to their hotel. Was so psyched by our performance (despite being crushed by the defeat, and blaming Pop Sims) that I told Dean, "See you in the tournament!"

I was too drunk. We were nowhere close to the tourney in those years.

Heartbreaking.  My senior year. Yes to Joe W. comments.  I have been thinking about that game a lot this week- I'll be going to the Providence game tomorrow with the guys I sat with at that NC game.

My recollection is of an epic collapse - maybe a 7 point lead w a minute to go. Steve Hale (I think) having game of his life.  Arrrggghhh.

My memory too, and I'm a couple of years younger, so should I still have my memory?! But I just watched it. What was a 9 point lead dwindled earlier. And, Pop Sims had a bad turnover but not within the last minute as my mind tells me. More, he had played a great game and shouldn't be the goat that my memory unfairly labels him as.

Was at that game and it was another nail in the Warrior Coffin. Began with Miami of Ohio and went through the Hank and Majerus years. We were sooo close and yet sooo far (sorry Frankie Valli).

It took KO to raise us from the dead.
