I've been going to games since I was 4 and caught the back end of Al's run as coach. I cannot recall a team assembled like this. In short, three years in, freshman are generally viewed as the most talented players and the leaders of the team. I can't recall a rebuild since Dukiet and the program's near extinction when that happened before.

O'Neill had the roster turned over in one year with freshman ruling the day. Crean did much the same and had the program rolling in his third year. So, the program rots from the inside under Buzz, and Wojo comes in a rush to piece together a first class. His second class is highlighted by a one-and-done who failed to elevate the team as a whole. Finally, his third class is stocked with what seems to be "his kind of guys." His new frosh take over and leave guys like Cohen and Carter in the wilderness.

The result is this feels like the "rebuild" didn't really start in earnest until this year, and freshman are the key contributors – meaning we might have to wait for year five to judge Wojo fully.

Have we ever seen a rebuild like this before?

O'Neill - Jim Mac, Damon Key and Logterman was a pretty good Freshman class

Crean - The three Amigos was another pretty good Freshman class.

In both cases they were the leaders of the team from the get go.

So yes, it is unusual, but not unprecedented.

Are u serious on the 3 amigos !!?? He recruited them in year 7 of his tenure.  Guy was a bum like the iu fans are realizing.  That guy had more swing n miss recruit that one could shake a stick at. Remeber years 5 n 6 under crean we were in the nit.  The guy sucked!!
If he hadnt recruited dwyane wade he would of gotten fired. The dude owes dwade 30 mil, heas a no talent

Wojos first 2 recruiting classes have turned out to be pretty much a bust for the program. Only 2 remain. A slumping cheatham and a redshirted sacar. The third recruit class has been pretty solid.

Good lord.  We are going to call that class a bust halfway through the sophomore year?  And Matt Heldt also remains.

Funny seeing someone with #UnleashRowsey ignoring that the Rowsey transfer was part of that second recruiting class.

Also, hard to blame Wojo for the first class when he got here in April.

I don't think that's the case. Luke is incredibly underappreciated and so necessary for this team. Of all players (40% mins+) with a usage of 20%+, Andrew Rowsey has THE BEST ORtg in the nation. #2-Markkanen, #3-Kennard. Katin has been excellent shooting the ball in conference play. JjJ and Haani have significantly stepped up their defensive rebounding for the betterment of the team.

Markus and Sam are exceptional and unusual frosh. It has a lot to do with who THEY are as kids and we knew they'd have an easier time transitioning to the college game than the average freshman. The are KEY COMPONENTS, but they certainly don't define this year's team.

Lots of difference pieces to this group.

JB with all these pieces being highly ranked/highly important - what is missing to make the team performance seem less impressive than the individual stats just listed?

Defense. We're heavy on the offensive vs. defense mix on the perimeter, especially at point guard, but I'm OK with that. because it's so good. More concerning is interior defense/rim protection. A big four to worry those who currently waltz to the rim and lay it up and in without a second thought would be helpful. Shot blocker/def rebounder inside would be helpful. Our defense is poor and I don't see a good way to change it dramatically this season.

Will Theo be this guy next year?

Some combo of Theo and Froling, I assume.

Part of our problem this season is that we can't go two bigs at the same time because a) foul trouble and b) neither can shift down to the 4 on offense.  Next year I expect to see Theo/Matt, Theo/Harry, Matt/Harry lineups (maybe Ike Eke too) at times, with Sam back at the 4 when we go small.

I also think that length on the perimeter is a problem, and a good 6'7" dude like Cain is going to help with that.

Yes, plus that pushes 6"7 Sammy to the perimeter and 6"5 Cheatham and 6"2 Duane to the 2 position rather than the 3.

Theo and Harry are the only big duo I think can work.  Matt/Harry can't guard a 4 in space.  Matt/Theo lacks floor spacing on offense.  Eke likely redshirt candidate.

It would depend on the match-up. Harry couldn't guard a Nigel Hayes type four. But he could easily guard an Ish Sanogo type four.  He might even be able to guard a stretch 4 like Kris Jenkins or Toby Hegner.

Matt/Theo on offense is a harder puzzle to solve. Given that our style tends to revolve around shooting, it's hard to see them both working. Unless Matt perfects that three point jumper we heard that he could hit in high school.

I think Wojo works on Matt's (He's a hard worker) offensive game this off season  I look for a lot more offensive moved under the basket and him to double his scoring if he gets the minutes next year.
