Could someone explain Wally 101?
Is he still attending school at Marquette in the fall?
If he is, is he still on the track team?
Did he quit the basketball team?
Thank you.

All TBD.  Presume he is still on the Track team.  All up to Wally though.

Velasquez reported that Wally could accept a full Track team scholarship if he chooses. So, your questions will be answered by Wally himself in due time. It's all on his shoulders.

Just add ... all indications are he was cut rather than quit.

Those indications are his mother's tweet and the entire Ellenson family unfollowing Wojo and MUBB on twitter.

It would be nice if Matt V attempted to get the Wally / Ellenson Family side of the story.

It's probably best we don't hear it. But I suppose if it comes off as sour grapes,  that could help. However,  public opinion is going to side with the 20 year old student athlete that appears to have done everything the right way (except basketball)

Why would Marquette BB not want Wally when they are thin to nonexistent at the 4?

1.Beause Wally's not a 4.

2.Because Wally's not very good.

Wally is a world class high jumper -it's an Olympic year...enough said

Guessing it's because the other guys near the end of the bench (Cohen, Anim) project better at that position in the coaches' eyes going forward and because they feel they can get a better fit in Wally's roster spot at that position.

marquette20

From what I heard he was cut from the team but they way they put it was "I'm not going to say he was but I'm not gonna say he wasn't either" hinting at the latter.

The truth hurts and sometimes we respond by saying things we later regret.

If Henry had stayed, Wally would still be on a basketball scholarship.  Everyone knows Wally was step 1 in getting Henry and that turned as predicted to be for one year.  Not a good way to build a team.  We have another projected starter coming in next year for just one year.  I hope things will eventually normalize.  I see more cuts coming.

Carlino too, three straight years of one and done.

Works for Duke and Kentucky

I think if they started talking, we'd all realize they have no real claims. Instead we'll juts get tweets.  Still I wish Matt V reached out to them.

Are people seriously complaining about Carlino and Henry being part of the program now? If we didn't have either of them in their respective years we would've been DePaul-level bad.

Should we complain about Rob Jackson and Trent Lockett as well?

MU62

We were not trying to build a program with Robert Jackson or Trent Lockett.  They were valuable additions to very consistently good teams. I hope that is what Wojo is trying to do right now.  I have never seen so many good players one and gone consecutively in my 51 years of season tickets.  This coming season will be our third year with one and done starters and did use Wally to get Henry which makes it 4 one year guys. We are in a tough conference and maybe there is more pressure on Wojo to win right away then I thought.  One thing for sure is that Buzz did not leave him with much.

I do see great promise with Haniff, Traci and now Sam and Markus.  That is the perfect way to go and I hope Wojo will continue to move in that direction in building the program.

He was Cut. Sucks. These scenarios arent good. Wojo feels the heat, and made a choice. Hopefully this isnt showing the kind of person Coach is.

So, cutting one in the hand versus maybe nothing in the bush was better?  It is the end of April and they are expecting to pick up someone better before August than Wally?  Wally has been in the Marquette system already two years.  To me, still doesn't seem to make sense.

Wally is pretty bad, so yeah. If they get Gill or Young it's a pretty clear step up.

By bad I mean by high major D1 standards. Still a good player compared to most.

vacinator

basically Wojo chose Reinhardt over Wally.  It may be a good basketball move but...   Bottomline its not a great outcome from a PR perspective

Well, then Wojo better get his act straight and start thinking about PR over sound basketball decisions. Doesn't he know he's supposed to make everyone feel warm fuzzies over our basketball program vs. uh, let's see, winning!!

Without Carlino we would have been lucky to get 10 wins...That kid is a winner. Tough and unafraid. We could have used his leadership this past season.

Considering the reasons Buzz is no longer here, yes, that's accurate. Winning is important, but it's hardly the only factor or Buzz never would have left.
