Derrycxk Thornton, PG from Duke transferring.

With our need for another guard, and Wojo's Duke ties I expect a commitment shortly

I figured this needed its own thread.  PG isn't exactly a need, but it isn't exactly wrapped up either.

A) One would have to think that this is a MPG-based decision and B) One would think Wojo already has a relationship here.

Discuss.

Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

He would have to sit out a year, so he wouldn't contribute to the current guard backlog. So I say yes we should give him strong consideration. The way Haanif is playing, he may end up going pro after next year and we would want another strong player ready to go.

Pretty sure he is the best PF solution of all seven of Wojo's PGs. His DR% is 6.5 which puts him at the top of the list.

I just can't see how we are going to have any room for him. I expect that he will be out west somewhere. California native.

No research to back this up, but it always seems to me that the Coach K Network doesn't go after players who have transferred from another school in the Coach K Network.

So you think Haanif will be ready for the pros next year, I think first he needs a jump shot at MU before you can even consider him for the pros, those slashing lay-ups
will be blocked in the pro game as Haanif does not play above the rim, explosive to the rim, but not explosive at the rim.

I agree.  Cal, USC, or UNLV have all been mentioned.

Maybe I'm missing something, but how/when/why would Wojo have a relationship with Thornton? MU never recruited him, and Jeff Capel isn't on the MU staff.

keefe

PG with that first name? No thank you.

Haven't we learned yet that a player doesn't have to be "ready for the pros" to leave school early? Haven't we?

Now, I don't think Haanif would leave after next season, but who knows what he will think or what those close to him will think?

But can we please, please, please drop the "ready for the NBA" thing? Look at the list of leaving-early guys. How many of them legitimately are "ready"? Many here would say Henry isn't ready. Many have said "nowhere near ready."

None of which matters. The NBA drafts for potential. Guys get bad advice. Etc, etc, etc. Being "ready" is way down on the list of reasons guys go pro early.

He was our best 3 pt shooter last year.

But he shoots a set shot. Unless he's Sam Perkins, that's not going to fly in the NBA.

Didn't Wojo make a run at Semi Ojeleye when he left Duke?

It does seem like an anomaly, though.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Considering that blue-blood recruits are typically first targeted early in their HS careers, would it not be plausible that Duke's initial contact with Thornton would have occurred while Wojo was still on their staff?

For all of these "unwritten" rules that the Duke coaching tree supposedly has (e.g. not scheduling against each other, not targeting transfers, etc.), I'm curious as to how well those walls hold up after K retires.

No, I don't believe so. Considering Wojo was his lead recruiter and we had a clear need I thought he was a natural fit, but I don't believe we ever were linked as even reaching out to him, nor were any of the other Duke disciples.
