Preseason Preview: San Jose State

Marquette Madness has come and gone. The season is so close, we can taste it. Marquette fans know who we will battle but might not know anything about our future opponents. To remedy this, Paint Touches is taking an in depth look at each of Marquette’s opponents, both conference and non-conference, to see what we [...]

6'8" frosh Cody Schwartz is from West DePere, WI.  Saw him play on TWC a couple times ( including against Sandy Cohen ).  Interesting player with a very nice shot.  Should do well with SJS.  MU did take a peek at him.

Henry Ellenson picks up two quick fouls against largely untalented tall guys?  I'm not buying it.

My prediction: It's a good thing for San Jose State that they have a lot of tall guys, they'll need 'em, because their inside guys are going to be fouling Henry and Luke quite a bit.  A minimum of two Ellenson steals will be followed by full court drives that will result in layups, Henry getting fouled or both.  Luke ends up with three blocks after being challenged - unsuccessfully - in the paint.  Cody Schwartz tries to do his damage from the outside.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Love this line

"Don't let their affiliation with the usually solid Mountain West deceive you, San Jose State is an awful team"

PT going full blast here.  I like it.  To hell with the trite "well, you know, SJSU did have some wins a few years ago, we can't afford to sleep on them..."  F that.  We can drink Nyquil, pass out, and destroy the snooze button for these clowns.

SJSU really isn't good at all.
Constant JUCO turnover
Coaches change every 5-7 years.
Little campus support

They have wins against U San Diego and Montana, both thought to be a decent amount better than them...... just trying to find some minor RPI silver lining here....

Marquette's Haanif Cheatham is showing unbelievable efficiency on offense. Shooting 59.6% from field, 79.2% from line, 64.3% from 3-point.

And played Santa Clara close on the road.  Maybe they can get a few wins against Montana St. at home and @SeattleU before conference play.  Even a few wins is better than what they did last year.

They won 0 D1 games last year, and this year are 2-4, so looking much better. That, and playing in the MWC may raise their RPI a bit. If they could get to 6 wins or so it wouldn't be quite the RPI drag that we anticipated. Still really bad, but not bottom 5-10 awful.

Rothstein is such a tool lick. Really dense.

Shooting is one thing, but if we're talking about efficiency - or UNBELIEVABLE efficiency - you must take into consideration Haanif's 28% turnover rate.

The concerning thing with HC is his turnovers have been OFF THE CHARTS against good teams - we're talking near 60% against Iowa/LSU/ASU... and has been good against weak opponents. Something to watch.

At any rate, a 109 offensive rating isn't "unbelievable efficiency" by any reasonable definition. Haanif has shot the ball very well.
