Postgame notes: Breaking down Marquette's loss to Belmont

Regardless of the outcome, that was a heck of a way to start the college basketball season. It was a tight game throughout, both teams had chances to win and there was a really good energy in the building.

Two points that are really worth revisiting...

Quote from: Matt VelasquezWith a sizable height advantage in the post, Marquette won the rebounding battle easily, 44-35. However, Belmont scored more second-chance points — 17-14 — despite having four fewer offensive rebounds.

This was brutal. So many missed and-one opportunities and losing the second chance points when we were better on the offensive glass just can't happen. Last year, it seemed regularly Luke needed to learn to go up strong and finish through contact. I thought his shoulder would improve that, but it looks like that's still a skill he needs to learn. 11 combined offensive boards for Henry and Luke should result in more points than that.

Quote from: Matt VelasquezFriday was not a good night for most teams heading to Brooklyn for the Legends Classic. In addition to Marquette losing, N.C. State lost by 17 to William & Mary and Sacramento spoiled Bobby Hurley's debut at Arizona State, knocking off the Sun Devils, 66-63. The only Legends Classic team to win its opener was LSU, downing McNeese State 81-70.

So in addition to Wisconsin losing, our second opponent in NYC lost last night as well. At least the rest of the Big East won, even if St. John's struggled doing so. Seems Friday the 13th was bad luck for quite a few teams.

I noticed the same thing with Luke - I don't recall exactly when it was in the second half, but luke had the ball in the paint, very close to the rim and laid it up and missed.  I screamed "dunk the damn ball."  The guy is BIG - use that to your advantage.

Eldon

The Bruins have lots of shooters and thus space the floor well. Knowing Marquette would overplay at the three-point arc after making 6 of 10 three-pointers early, Belmont took advantage of that space by using Evan Bradds in the pick and roll and numerous back-cutters from the corners. When Marquette defenders sunk off the perimeter to guard against the drive or pick and roll, Belmont's shooters had no problem throwing up three's, making 12 of 34.

Aaaaand that pretty much sums it up.

Hard to disentangle player youth vs coach youth as the culprit here, but I think it's lame to fall back on "this is a hard team to defend."  I mean hell, MU will certainly face other really good shooting teams.

It seems to me that Luke is having a harder time adjusting to how the game is called than all of the other players, except for maybe Carter. He is getting both offensive and defensive fouls called on him that would not of been called last year.
