Played great tonight.  Should not be underestimated.  Its early but he has definitely turned around his FT shooting this year.

Tonight's stats:
4-5 3pt
4-4 FTs
18 points

McNeal - There's not much else to say other than AWESOME.

bananahammock

DJ set the tone and played a great game!  hopefully this shooting performance helps his confidence.

When James and McNeal play like this (under control, tenancious D, making good decisions, hitting open shots) Marquette is a handfull for just about any team in the country.  Of course I realize it is only one game obviously.  Now Marquette needs to show some consitency.

SoCalwarrior

This was a one half game and James was the stud.

spiral97

McNeal won out on stud of the game.. james was a CLOSE second.. barro gets honorable mention..
james' 18 points with 1 reb on 5-11 shooting still gets beat by mcneal's 20 points, 5 rebs, and 7-14 shooting.  tough call but mcneal is stud king until he's knocked off the thrown.

Anyone think MU missed McNeal just a little bit against Michigan State last year?

Daniel

Non-stop swarming defense, moving the ball well to the open man, great looks, great shots - everyone out there played well, and Hazel got to play a few.

THIS is the way to play basketball!  Go Marquette!!!!!!!!!!!!

Word, I def always thought since sophomore year (which is also DJ/JM/WM's sophomore year) that McNeal's Stud Status > DJ's stud status.  When DJ's hot, he's hot, but McNeal is ballin' day in and day out.

I told my dad that during the game...now he is a big McNeal fan.

Thomas' Danish Delight

right?

He had the dunk that looked like a layup (he put it down through the hoop and grabbed a rim...dunk, right) against I think UVS, and then 2 against Chaminade.

jm gets my osu game mvp..he shot 3 more times than dj and took 2 more free throws..id say dj would have scored 20 as well given the attempts..however dj had 4 to's and jm had 0<----that is HUGE...when jerel doesnt turn the ball over he can b as good as any1 in the country not just on mu team..if dj and jm can play like that all year..big if..we lose 2 to the league next yr imo

DAtruth

oops jm shot 4 more free throws..sorry

Doctor V

i have said the whole time that James needs to control the game on the offensive end- he NEEDS to be the pg with the ball in his hands for the majority of the game. Acker is excellent in relief. Mcneals stats were better yesterday, but DJ was the best player on the court for MU and this team needs that.

Also, I have said and still believe that this team can hold its own down low, and that the biggest key to this season will be hitting open jump shots, 3 or not. we saw that yesterday

Barro was all over the place last night.  He's so unorthodox - elbows flying all over the place - but he was very effective.  If he can be consistently productive and give us that energy every game, we may have something here after all.

And yes, McNeal is awesome.

James had none against UVS.  Only dunk for us in that game was Burke.

Then it musta been IUPUI.

Only dunk for us in the IUPUI game was by Matthews.

Here's a video of the "dunk" in question (during the UVS game).  I don't know what to call it...

I didn't realize this until looking at the box score on ESPN today. In a game where we turn it over 19 times, it's great to see Jerel hold onto the ball. Good for him. Unless ESPN is wrong.

TURNOVERS: 19 (D James 4, W Matthews 3, D Cubillan 2, M Acker 2, D Burke 3, L Hayward 4, O Barro 1)

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't see this was mentioned in the James thread below.

murocky01

I don't see how you can call that a "dunk."  It was a soft lay in.  Maybe back in 1998 we would have considered that a dunk since we only had about one every 5 games, and the most exciting play we could look forward to was a 3-pointer from Wardle.  I don't think DJ would consider that a dunk either.
