Morgan State thoughts
« on: December 28, 2014, 02:55:52 PM »
1.  Sharing the ball is fun.
2.  Running fast breaks is fun.
3.  6 in double figures is every coach's dream.
4.  Cupcakes are tasty.
5.  I am concerned how Luke is going to do against an athletic center.
6.  The season starts in earnest now.   Get healthy, stay out of foul trouble.
7.  There were some flat stretches today.  Cupcake, first game after Christmas, yeah, I get it.
8.  Duane Wilson mades 1 or 2 plays almost every game that makes me wish he had been healthy last year.
9.  I didn't like the 4 guard line up.  I can see it at the end of the game when the other team is fouling, since I currently trust Derrick more than I do Juan to make a free throw.   But only then.
10.  Impressed by how Juan brought the ball up against the press.

Allbeit mainly in garbage time, but I like that Cohen hit three 3's and scored from the free throw line with 11 points.  With only eight legit players we are going to need him this season.  I have a funny feeling he will turn a game around at some point during conference play.

I remember Paint Touches doing a piece on Steve Taylor talking about how he had an absurdly high putback percentage on offensive rebounds as a freshman. His surgery must have taken a lot out of his explosiveness, because he is having a tough time inside. He used to have a pretty nice hook shot.

Also, I think Sandy is going to be a very nice player when he gets comfortable on defense. He looks like he's thinking a lot, and not always sure where to be. As he gets more experience, I think he'll be a pretty good defender. When he can set and shoot, he doesn't miss many.

Otherwise, a nice balanced offensive day. I enjoy watching this team play.

I liked seeing Cohen get some minutes today. I agree that some more experience and few more pounds of muscle he will turn out to be a good player for MU.

I watched Sandy warming up prior to the Bama A and M game at the Al. For a stretch he was about 9 of 12 from 3. Corner and wings. That form is beautiful. Hope he continues to contribute.

Those 17 offensive boards are concerning.

And will be all year.  Part of the problem today was that some of the misses were such bricks and the rebounds so long that they came over the collapsing MU team.    A few, but many were just poor technique by MU and effort by Morgan St.

We will never again get 15 - 18 from the floor by the bench.

O rebounds concerning in the box score but at the game I thought to myself a lot of those were the long rebounds on 3 point bricks not sure what you can do about those.

Cohen sprinted back on defense on one play and I remember thinking that was why he was all state in track.

He was more than all-state, he was state champion.

It was not in sprinting it was in the long jump.

I agree with you. just correcting the record

Side note, how impressive is it to be long jump state champion, like Cohen was in 2014?  In 2011 Melvin Gordon, competing for Bradford in Kenosha, finished second in the long jump.

Oh, and if your are still not impressed, Cohen was also state champion in the triple jump in 2013 (second in 2014)

And Cohen is not even the best jumper on the team (Ellenson)

If you are correcting the record.......Sandy was a state champ in the TRiple Jump,  the long jump(3rd place).

Season high 67.9% eFG% today. The 3-man bench scored 39 & shot 94.4% eFG%.

Thanks for ruining summer, Canada.

So, what seemed fast was actually a triple jump, three strides from half court to the baseline.

Just watched the game. Liked Luke passing out of the post. If he can do that regularly and the guards hit the open threes we will have some offense.

Speaking of jumping Juan has some hops. Has he won every tip this year??

I do like watching Juan dunking on the break as well. Did not think I would ever say that. He looked so lost on the break in the past but he has had some pretty slams this year.

My son got me and the wife student section seats so I was second row watching the game.  I was impressed at how Juan was instructing STJ during the game on where to go and how to play his position in the zone defense. Juan was literally pushing STJ on where to go and who to cover when. I was also disappointed that my wife had to ask me why Juan was telling Steve how to play defense.  Her question says a lot.  She asked me "Why does another player have to tell Steve how to play defense?  Shouldn't he know that by now?"  Classic.

An argument can be made that Juan has been our best player in pre-conference this year. At least our most consistently productive. Although if based on the last 4 games alone it's Fischer for sure.
