RACINE – For quite a while Friday, no golfer was taking ownership of the scoreboard in the first round of the Racine Tri-Course Amateur Championship.

Then Kaylor Steger came in.

Steger, who won the WIAA Division 1 state high school championship in June and has qualified for the two biggest tournaments in the state, shot a 4-under-par 68 at the H.F. Johnson Park Golf Course and has a four-stroke lead over four other players.

THOMAS MAKES THE CUT: Former Marquette basketball player Jake Thomas, a St. Catherine’s High School graduate, played in his first Tri-Course and shot an 82 to make the cut.

Thomas, who will begin playing basketball with his Swiss professional team in August, had a triple bogey on the ninth hole as he shot 44-38.

“It was frustrating,” Thomas said. “I had four putts that I missed by an inch, but that’s golf. It was fun.

I can't believe Buzz didn't put Mayo in after the triple-bogey!

Does Jake know he needs a fairway touch before putting?

Brett could have put Jake on a golf scholarship.

Fitting that Jake couldn't make a shot close in. He is much better with his long irons I hear but even those only work a third of the time.

Maybe with a smaller ball and a bigger hole his shot improves.
