That's me....why didn't we go after him so we don't have threads like "For you Wojo Lovers" or "For you Martin haters"

jesmu84

From the info I've seen around the interwebs, speculation is that his personality may be a little too grating for an MU administration that just dealt with another large personality that didn't work out in the end. Obviously, I don't know what's exactly true. Just providing info.

Good question.  You think MU would have at least put in a phone call.

I thought we didn't do a thread on him, because of the following:

1.  He's an ass( according to prior threads) - Not that I think this has any bearing anyways.
2.  He can't recruit up to MU standards
3.  The last time he sniffed a big program, he got cold feet and ran away after accepting the job:  NC State.
4.  (add additional reason here)

Here's my thing with Martin.  UT fans know if he leaves, he leaves and they can hire someone else that is as good or better.  Wouldn't that be a great feeling to have at MU one day?  In some cases it has turned out that way, but it's always a risk with MU, so much uncertainty.

It would be nice to say, ok Buzz is leaving but we're replacing him a with a guy that went to a Final Four(s) (Smart, Marshall, Howland)...all three would be fine.  No, instead we will replace him with a guy (potentially) that has never coached in his life as a head coach or one that went to the NCAA tournament one time as a head coach in 6 years.

Sure, people can get on me for this, but is anything I'm saying not truthful?  Do we not have a huge basketball budget?  Are we not supposedly at a certain level...I keep hearing we are, but if we were why is it that MU never seems to be able to come up with a slam dunk hire.

Just once in my life it would be great to see, but it isn't going to happen it appears this time around either.

Should at least get an interview.  Sure he's an ass, most coaches are.  Seems our administration is too afraid of not being able to have control on a strong coach with a transitioning President and big TBD April 2015 on the AD spot so they'd prefer the "happy to be here"s.

TAMU, Knower of Ball

Doesn't pass the sniff test.

Whether you like it or not, Marquette has higher standards for their coaches. They let them down for a few years with Buzz, and look what happened. It's understandable that they are looking for a high character individual.

Sheesh Chicos--that makes too much sense, Howland, Marshall, Smart. Well, Smart played us, but we tried, just let it play out too long, I do not understand why we are not pursuing Howland, some say that Strong doesn't want him. Maybe they should make Strong MU President and AD combined. Marshall, I view is waiting for a blueblood.
So now we will settle for a guy a month ago the fans wanted to run out of town., Martin.
And there will be plenty of fans not happy. But as long as Strong is happy, it is OK.
I thought you were dead. Willie lives rent free in Reekers mind. Rick Pitino: "You can either complain or adapt."

And you're sure that they didn't?

WadeATKBurton

Marquette considers themselves as big time program and a destination job. I like that way of thinking. With that said, Marshall doesnt fit into the plans for us. He even said himself that he dont go after 4 or 5 star players. In order to be competitive like Marquette want to be you HAVE to be able to go after top talent. Marshall sells himself short by not even WANTING to persue top players

I wouldn't go to Vol fans for opinions on coaches. They think they have someone better because the next guy is always better than the guy you have. Backup QB syndrome

i'd rather have any of the 3 you mention...but UT fans (and all fans in general) can say what they want, and they're often wrong.  hard to argue with the success buzz had on the court.

it sounds like mu did have the opportunity to sign marshall, and certainly howland, so it's not like we can't get those names, it's that we choose to go in a different direction.

that said, i still really, really, really want howland.

Jams

You know damn well there is a bit of stench for those downwind Wichita. This has nothing to do with his abrasive personality. Hell, if that were a legitimate criteria for an industry dominated by hot headed egomaniacs our short list would be mighty short. Fact is we dispensed with a ticking time bomb so I doubt the university wants to bring another one on board.

Marquette was all set to hire the scion of the Flying Nun empire but their due diligence uncovered the heady aroma of fecal matter so we went with an honest piano player.
