Nelson: Ben Howland best fits Marquette’s criteria

While sitting in the media room Thursday at the Al McGuire Center and listening to Bill Cords discuss Marquette’s coaching vacancy, two traits became apparently clear for a coach to be considered for the job. First, a track record of success at a major program. “We feel we have everything in place in terms of support [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=11643&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

I still think Howland is in the mix.  The longer this drags on reminds of something I heard and makes me think there's may be some similarity.  I heard/read when Bill Cowher retired from the Steelers, that team management had someone in mind as a replacement, but interviewed Mike Tomlin because of the Rooney Rule.  Team management was so blown away by the interview they chose him as the next coach.  I'm thinking they spoke with Howland who informed Marquette that he has zero interest in any of the other openings out there.  Marquette let him know we're interested, but we have to do our due dilligence.  BH said OK.  Knowing Howland will still be out there, Marquette decided to take their time to speak with other viable candidates to see if any of them blow them away in the interview process.  Sounds like Shaka did before he changed his mind.  (And no we are not doing a version of the Rooney Rule either just trying to find the best fit for us.)

The take-their-time part is painful for MUScoop, but I'm sure the MU administration sees it as being prudent.

Now can they make a decision already..............

It's bad PR, so Cords ignored another criteria that Marquette has.  They want a coach that the AD doesn't have to make a bunch of rules for in order to keep Marquette off the front pages of newspapers for all the wrong reasons.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
