There has been a lot of talk about potential coaching replacements.  Here are some guys that haven't been mentioned as college coaches, but are former NBA players who have been mentioned for NBA head coaching jobs.  Any interest in these guys:

Terry Porter
Brian Shaw-didn't realize he was the Nuggets coach-duh!
Sam Cassell
George Karl?  I realize he is rather ancient and has had some medical issues, but he always spoke well of Milwaukee and he is out of coaching.  Hiring him as a head coach and an heir apparent might not be a bad route.....

Any thoughts?

Doc rivers would be awesome but not happening.

Let's Go Warriors

Warrior As defined by Webster's:
A person who fights in battles and is known for having courage and skill

Eldon

Just out of curiosity, what about Baylor's Scott Drew?

Why think outside the box, when the box itself is apparently full of great options?

What box? ;D
Your mom's! Hey Oh!!!

I would actually prefer Karl over any name mentioned here the last two days.  He likes it here and has a huge chip on his shoulder.  I just doubt he is interested in coaching college kids.

Larry Brown did it, why not George?

It is?  Who are these great options you speak of?

Howland, Marshall...been reported to be options. True? Who knows? If they are, those are great options.

I disagree with them being great options.  But, that's what message boards are for.
My concerns
Will players want to play in Howland's style and can he keep the inmates in-line?
Can Marshall recruit on a larger stage and can he hold up to the grind of the Big East and its scheduling?

Obviously both have good traits about them and a track record of success, but there are major questions with both.

I'm thrilled Buzz is gone, but I hope these two aren't the only options.
I would like a big splash.  If I had my pick, Smart or Karl, not sure if either is a realistic option though.

While I'm not sure that the options in the OP were great candidates, I will say that I did a mental checklist along the same lines of BenCat. I wasn't able to come up with many great options, but it was still a fun exercise.

Reggie Theus could make for an interesting left field candidate. He had some success at New Mexico State before going to the Kings and the D-League. Now he's back in the college ranks at Cal State Northridge who just lost to Cal Poly in the conference championship game of the Big West. Probably a bit below the level MU is aiming for, but I wouldn't be surprised to see Theus work his way up the college ranks in the coming years.

I think Jalen Rose could make a great CBB coach, but he's probably pretty happy at ESPN, and he would need quite a bit of seasoning/proof he could keep his arms wrapped around his team (got caught partying with Indiana's team not-long-enough-ago).

Some others would probably have a really tough time breaking into recruiting circles, and probably don't have enough name recognition/automatic pull based on NBA chops to really sway recruits - PJ Carlesimo, Avery Johnson, or Maurice Cheeks (would really make a great CBB coach IMO, but no experience/recruiting background).

Blackhat

You've got to make sure you get the hungry coach too....Carlesmo seems like a "just give me the check don't care if I win guy."

That better not be Howland deep down....Buzz had the passion...Crean had it.   At MU you need some intangibles that separate you,  both had crazy work ethics.

Howland a golfer?

Dirty as they come....no thanks

You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

Outside the box?  Some of these names are fantasy.

George Karl
Sam Cassell
Terry Porter
Reggie Theus
Jalen Rose
Mentioned elsewhere:
Doc Rivers
Brad Stevens

Really, it's a waste of ink.
