I don't know much about Chew or frankly any other long shot candidates but wonder if he'd be considered for the job.  I understand he's a top-notched recruiter.  Was he instrumental in the current players arrival and those committed for next year?  Sometimes I think recruiting may be more important than the X and O's.

bobnoxious

I was thinking he should be at the top of the list, paid him big money to get him from Illinois so you would have to think he would be considered

Earl Tatum

NOPE! Didn't see all the Illinois stars come to MU. He was suppose to be the savior.

TAMU, Knower of Ball

You have to give him an interview. But I doubt he gets hired.

This is another reason I prefer a "brand name coach." Chew won't mind being an assistant to someone like Howland. He may have something to say about being an assistant to Wardle.

Chew brings a lot to this program. I don't want to see him go

I would like to se him stay as assistant, not head coach. Keeping chew will make the existing players and some recruits more comfortable about staying. Litt less change and unknown.

GooooMarquette

Agree that he should get an interview, and maybe the job.

But IMHO the best case scenario might be Howland and Chew....

nyg

Hopefully AD Cords has spoken to Chew and made it a priority that the new Head Coach must retain Chew as an assistant if they want the job.  That would work.

Had he been able to recruit the top echelon of the Chiraq recruits (i.e. Parker, Matthews, Okafor, Cliff) it would be one thing.  But we haven't really cracked the market there.

Great point.  Count that as another strike against Wardle.

I hope Chew stays, too.  Recall that Chew actually drew up the play that got Jake Thomas the only and only technical of his career

Why take a chance on this unknown? What has he ever done?

Chew won some recruiting battles, just not any against Kansas, Kentucky or Duke.  At Marquette what assistant would have?  He did get us a much bigger chance with Matthews than almost anyone else would have.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

SWARM!

No, no, no, no, and no.  Sorry.

It's not about having a bigger chance, it's about actually signing the players from those blue bloods....

Chew is very different from Buzz and Crean.  Very willing to take the time to just shoot the sh!t with fans, very down to Earth and personable.  Myself and the 3 guys I went to Lexington with last year were sitting around the hotel lobby watching other NCAA Tournament games after the Davidson win and he went out of his way to come over and talk to us.  Spent a good 10 minutes just chatting about the trip and anything else.

Compare that to when we saw Buzz walking down the street with a few others that night and one of the guys in the group just yelled "Keep rolling!" to Buzz and Buzz just gave him a cold glance and kept walking.  Not trying to knock on Buzz, it comes with the territory and there are many more who would react that way than there are who would sit and talk like Chew did, just saying if they want a personable, respectful guy to fill the roll Chew might be that guy.  I hope he stays on as an assistant though.

Let's see you do it, hot shot.

Like politics, recruiting is the art of the possible.  The prerequisite to signing a Charles Matthews is getting a player of that stature seriously interested in going to a school which hasn't had a player like him commit there in that players memory.

Once again, it's about actually signing those players! Howland has done it both in the SoCal area and nationally! That is the difference between a Howland (who HAS done it) and Chew (who could possibly do it, but hasn't yet)!  Howland has shown he has mastered the Art....

If you follow marquette basketball the last two coaches we hired were young assistants and that worked out pretty well didn't it?  I like Chew he can prove that he can recruit and I think he would have a good chance of keeping Hill and the entire recruiting class together.  The reason Howland could recruit was he was at UCLA that is a destination spot with great history.  The other negative is Howland couldn't control the players that SI article makes it seem he can't control his team.  If they higher Chew many of you would be pissed but young coaches when given a chance have worked for us before.

You know that Howland built the Pitt program and put it on the map right?  It's not like UCLA was a fluke...  Also, did he lose control of his players at Pitt?  I'm sure he will approach his next opportunity differently.
