JuJuan's recent stat line

Feb 1 - at St. Johns, 23 minutes, 6 points
Feb 4 - Butler, 12 minutes, 0 points
Feb 11 - at Seton Hall, 1 minute, 0 points
Feb 15 - Xavier, 2 minutes, 0 points
Feb 19 - Creighton, did not play
Feb 22 - @ DePaul, did not play

------------------------

What is going on here?  Is he hurt or is he not getting it in practice?

I was at the DePaul game and I noticed JJJ was sitting at the end of the bench, like he knew he would not play.  In the second half I saw Buzz sit next to him and they talked.

So, I ask again, what is going on?

I don't think anyone on this board will be able to tell you exactly what is going on. So, instead of inciting a bunch of speculation, just email Buzz. Multiple people have emailed him on this board and he responds pretty promptly it seems. Go for it.

bradley center bat

He is so lost on the court on defense.

Markusquette

He got so sick of his name being misspelled that he requested to transfer.

I really don't think this is true at all. The last games where he actually got playing time he played fine defense...well at least as good as most on this team. This has become an easy cop out answer for posters on this board. The bottom line is Buzz is loyal to his upperclassmen plain and simple. He's the coach, so that's his prerogative to do so. The lost on defense argument is very old and really has no merit anymore.

The bottom line is simple, Buzz plays the players that give them the best chance to win.  That involves more than pure talent or offensive abilities.  There is a lot more to the game than talent and offense.

Here we go again

Man, I never realized there were so many effin psychologists on this board. That, and body-language specialists.

False. Buzz has said multiple times he prefers defense to offense and plays the guys who stick to the gameplan and scouting report. Why doesn't JJJ play? I don't have that answer. No one on this board has that answer. However, if we are to extrapolate from what Buzz has stated previously, it's due to JJJ not doing those 2 things better than the guys who are playing in front of him, in Buzz's opinion. Period.

And experts on others deficiencies

Because as a freshman he has not earned the right to be on the floor because he is overwhelmed and lost on defense on a regular basis.

And I mean lost.

It doesn't take a brain surgeon to have an opinion and to tell why he is not playing from what Buzz likes to have his players to be able to do.

Part of playing is trust. And trust is developed by your attitude, focus, preparation and character. JuJuan is a freshman. He probably got hollered at in practice and he has to grow through it.

Nothing major...just work it out.

Why Doesn't JuJuan Johnson Play Defense?

JJJ played zone in HS as I recall.  Going from a relatively simple high school defense to a more complex man-to-man can be difficult for many players.

Stretchdeltsig

Where is the coaching?  JJJ is a highly talented player.  The coaches should be teaching defense to the players from day one in practice.  On the other hand it seems that our defense stinks this year.  Something isn't clicking and it's Buzz's responsibility.

Marquette teaches defense from day one.  But it isn't as easy as you think.  First you have the overall scheme, and then you have how that scheme applies to different teams and personnel.

I agree that this defense isn't as good this year, but Buzz has a history of decent defense.  JJJ will be fine.

MuMark

He doesn't play because he is behind Jake and Mayo in the depth chart and Buzz has shortened the rotation.......

It doesn't take a genius to figure it out........
