Can Jamil Wilson push Marquette to March Madness?

Marquette began the second half of its Big East schedule on Saturday with an impressive come-from-behind win over Butler. It's unknown whether that win will be part of the equation that allows the Golden Eagles an at-large bid, but it's safe to say it saved the season for now. And while Todd Mayo was a [...]<img alt="" border="0" src="http://stats.wordpress.com/b.gif?host=painttouches.com&blog=28348875&post=10925&subd=painttouches&ref=&feed=1" width="1" height="1" />

This long time Warrior does not disagree with your fine analysis. Jamil Wilson will, indeed, be key to any possible stretch drive. However, the "killer" for this team is now well established. It is, obviously, Todd Mayo.

In the last four games, he canned the three that sent the G'town game into overtime.

Then against Villanova he scored 10 points in 38 seconds (my sweet lord, 10 points in 38 seconds!), cooly sinking three free throws to send the game into overtime. (For which he was rewarded by warming the bench at the start of the overtime period.)

Mayo never saw the court in the second half of the St. John game. (Were he and Jamil being punished for something?)

In the Butler game he went on not one, but two, single handed 7-0 runs. Think about that ... two 7-0 runs to carry the Warriors back from a death spiral.

Inconsistent or not, the guy is truly the cold blooded gun slinger - the killer - for the Warriors. The rest of Warriors job (in particular Jamil) is clear. Be sure to keep it close stay close.

Mayo will do the rest.

without reading the article, I say, Yes he can.

He has a track record of playing very well close to and into the tournament.

We need leaders, not a single leader.  Every game is a team effort.

Stretchdeltsig

We need Jamil to play hard and give his all for us to win.  He needs to make his first shot.  We also need Mayo, Taylor, Gardner, Burton, Johnson and Dawson to play a lot of minutes for this team to win.

We R Final Four

We need J Will to drive to the hoop early in the game, not chuck long 2 pointers early in the shot clock, early in the game.

That was a fun trip down memory lane.

I'd say Wilson's role this year is to be a beast on the glass, along the baseline, from the wing on the break and at the elbow in the teeth of a zone.

If he gets a few 3s off kick-outs or as the trailer before the d gets set, go for it.

But he's gotta be our beast.

jsheim

Even if he shows up bigger than we can think...the question is can he cause, by himself, 7 wins out of 8 games.
We're two far down for one guy to make the difference. Its gonna take three or 4 showing up multiple times....and Buzz to substitute the right guys at the right time better than he's doing it now.

But I'm still hoping on all that happening....will be at the Xavier game and hope that after that game we will be hoping on 5-1 rather than 7-1.

mviale

we need 20 wins and a win against Creighton  or Nova to enter Tourney.  Totally doable.
You heard it here first. Davante Gardner will be a Beast this year.

I'm a big fan of Jamil Wilson. Up until about now thought he would be a first rounder. He is the most articulate  player we've had in a while. Believe he has a future beyond basketball

But......I think he is Ron Curry.  He should be playing better.  So much potential, so little result.  I hope I'm proven wrong.

Think Jamil is a great young man..like you say...bright, articulate...seems like such a happy go lucky guy...that needs a little more of an edge.

However, the Ron Curry comparison doesn't strike me.  Thought Ron was actually really productive while at MU, and put up much more consistent numbers than has Jamil.  My recollection was Curry was a 16 and 8 kind of player his senior year...

Comparisons aside, still don't think Jamil is the key to our making the NCAA - that's going to rest with Mayo, and Buzz - Buzz to the extent will he max Mayo's minutes, as well as give some generous minutes to Burton and Dawson...while pulling back on Derrick and Jake's.

Hmmm ... this is such an unusual stance for you to take!

They've dug themselves a huge hole, obviously. They aren't getting in unless they go at least 6-2 (one of the wins vs. Nova or Creighton). MU RPI sits at 87 now, 56 on KenPom. If they win out maybe the RPI in the mid 60s and KenPom in mid 40s. The lowest RPI rated teams to get at-large bids: #67 USC (2011) 56 on KenPom, #64 Marquette (2011) 30 on KenPom, #63 NC State (2005) 23 on KenPom, #63 Stanford (2007) 57 on KenPom.

If they can get into the mid/high 60s, finish 3rd in the big east I think they get an at-large bid....regardless of the Big East tournament. Big east is the 3rd ranked conference on KenPom and 4th in RPI. Finishing 3rd, with MU's track record, should get you in.

But to answer the question, I don't see it happening.
