Yeah, I know. If it was a "tougher" opponent, the frosh would rarely see the wood.
That said, I think Buzz is still sorting out his starters and his bench, especially the frosh and who he can trust.

I can tell you that I trust Derrick...

To miss FTs. smh
I'm right there with you on that. I like how J Dawson looks and can't wait for Duane to be back.

Maybe one half of it.

MattyWarrior

Otule at 46% FT? That is beyond awful.

AZWarrior

Otule needs to lift some weights.  He's clearly not strong enough to get the ball all the way to the cylinder.  However, he's quite consistent at hitting the front of the rim.  :-(
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

Lighthouse 84

I love the way TM is playing. Good D and confident on O.

Anyone else think Southern's unis are too big?

Mayo seems confident.   CO looks like he is having depth perception issues.   The shots are on-line, off distance.   Gardner starting to miss free throws.   That crap gets contagious.   C'mon boys.   Make the freebies.

Is STJ hurting or just playing poorly?

Started the second half, got a couple of boards, missed a couple of shots, started sitting.      Bad FT shooting is contagious.     Damn

Otule and D. Wilson are 3 for 12 from FT line with four to go. Thats 9 points

MattyWarrior

Mayo looks good, nice change of direction and his rebounding is solid!

tower912

Gardner is 3-7 in the second half.   Mayo isn't much better.  26-41  FT's  after Mayo's two makes.

I just watched #0 so obviously, blatently travel, at 4:22 left in the game for those with DVRs, 3 feet in front of the ref, who was oblivious.  I don't expect them to see everything, but....

STjr, not the time for that 3.   If that is so open, take it to the friggin rack.

Where to even start with these stats, just insane.

FGs Southern had 59 attempts, MU had 36..

FTs Southern was 6 for 16, while MU was 33 for 53.  Those stats are unreal.  27 more fts than Southern and MU missed 20.

MU out rebounded 38 to 35

MU starting five had 15 points, 10 of which were by J. Wilson.

Taylor   0 points, 0 for 4
Thomas 2 points, 0 for 3
Otule    2 points, 0 for 0
Anderson 0 points, 0 for 1
D. Wilson 1 point, 0 for 0

D. Wilson 0 for 0 FG, 1 for 4 FTs, 4 rebs, 3 assists, 2 TOs.  Same as last year, nothing new.

willie warrior

Ox and Mayo did all the heavy lifting. Both looked good.

Burton looked pretty good out there.

Otule and De. Wilson cannot make FT's. Team FT shooting needs to improve.

Anderson and Thomas need to spend more time on the pines.

Not a very good opener, but we won, which is a good thing.

Here's my two cents...

1. I started out worrying about only the 1 and 2, but by the second half I realized that with Mayo's play, really the spots to worry about are the 1 and the 3. Derrick didn't look great but hopefully he settles in. The back-up to Jamil at the 3 is quite important and it seems empty right now. It will be interesting to see if Juan and Deonte can back Jamil up adequately. Playing Jake Thomas and Mayo at the same time should never be an option.

2. Jake Thomas needs to have his minutes dropped. I do not understand anybody who says he needs more minutes. If he could play a Lockett role I'd be all for it but he simple does nothing at high major D1 level.

3. This team has serious potential. But I think that depends mostly on the freshmen. We need the back-ups to give quality minutes because I think Marquette could be top 10 material if our best 5 played the whole game. Absurd, I know, but unlike last year I don't see our depth being our strong point this year. Less 5 man switches.

I watched on the grainiest feed possible so my excitement for MU basketball might be overriding the actual play tonight. But I saw lots of good in the 7 point win over Southern.

Also--Josh Smith v. Gardner is going to be an awesome matchup to watch

MU82

I didn't see one second of this game. Just saw the ESPN crawl occasionally and couldn't believe we couldn't put away the Little Sisters of the Poor.

But, yes, it's the opener. Looking at the minutes, it's clear Buzz was just trying to see what he has. I get that, and I'm not a panicky type on Scoop or anywhere else.

And looking at the stats, my No. 1 concern going into the season is unchanged: Derrick Wilson has shown nothing to suggest he is a high-major starting PG. How many legitimate contenders have a starting PG who can't make a 3, can't make a J and brick more than half of his FTs? You can't beat good teams getting that from the PG position.

That Derrick played 34 minutes speaks volumes about what Buzz thinks of the alternatives, and that might be the scariest thing of all.

Little Sisters of the Poor????

You realize that this team is the odds on favorite to win the SWAC, right?

And last year after winning said conference came awfully close to being the first 16 seed to beat a #1 seed in the NCAA tournament, right?

Lost to Gonzaga by just six points, right?

Save the Little Sisters of the Poor stuff for Grambling, they deserve it.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

2. I would be willing to bet that Jake will not see 22 minutes again this year. This is what Buzz does early in the season.

3. I think depth will be very important by the time we start the league season with a couple of freshman helping win some games later.
