ESPN.com vice president and editor-in-chief to give Axthelm lecture

Rob King, vice president and editor-in-chief of ESPN.com, will present "The Wild,Wild Web: How Technology and Fan Expectations are Driving Change at ESPN.com" on Thursday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in room 001 of Cudahy Hall, 1313 W. Wisconsin Ave. The event is free and open to the public.

As editor-in-chief of ESPN.com, King supervises the Web site's overall editorial direction as well as more than 200 editors, writers, designers and producers. King joined ESPN four years ago as a senior coordinating producer, where he worked on the NBA studio shows, ESPNEWS network, Outside the Lines, and ESPN's golf coverage. Prior to joining ESPN, he spent nearly 22 years at various newspapers as an editorial cartoonist, graphic artist and reporter. Ultimately, he served as deputy managing editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer.

The Pete and Bonnie Axthelm Memorial Program was established to acknowledge and recognize the life of Pete Axthelm, a former writer at the New York Herald Tribune, Sports Illustrated and Newsweek, and his sister Bonnie, a former Media Networks and 3M executive. Each year since 1994, the Axthelm Memorial Program awards one scholarship to an outstanding Marquette journalism student who has an interest in sports journalism.  Since 1996, a notable journalist or executive has given the Axthelm lecture.  Past speakers include Robert Lipsyte, Jimmy Breslin, Steve Rushin, Norby Williamson and Bill Hancock.
