In case you are an RCN subscriber (Chicago, Boston, New York, Philly and D.C. markets) - looks like they are adding FS1 but it will be in an extra package. Kinda sucks...right now Speed is part of their basic package. But at least its available. Looks like my cable bill is going up...

Per RCN's facebook page:

Fox Networks recently announced they are replacing the Speed Channel with a new channel, FOX Sports 1, on August 17, 2013. RCN will be making this change. FOX sports 1 will launch in the same channel location now occupied by the Speed Channel in the Premiere Sports and Premiere Total Packages.

As a RCN customer, this is great news! On a side note, how do you not have the sports package yet? No ESPN U, NBA TV, Golf Channel, and CBS Sports!?

I'm with RCN Chicago, it sounds like we have different packages. What market are you in?

I just have their regular HD premier lineup and I get all ESPN Channels (including ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU), Big Ten Network, NBCSports, and Comcast Sports. I do not have the premier sports package. That would include MLBTV, NBATV, NHLTV, Fox Soccer and it looks like FS1. I wish it was in the first group of stations.

I'm in Chicago too. I had to get the premier sports package to receive ESPN U.

Here are the current channels for premier sports;

Fox Deportes
ESPN Classic
ESPN-U
ESPN Deportes
Speed
YES
CBS Sports Network
The Golf Channel
FUEL TV
G4
GolTV (English)
HRTV
TVG
NHL Network
NFL Network
Tennis Channel
MLB Network
NBA TV

I have no idea what's going on then. Because on my HD premier package, I get about half of those channels, but the others I don't (strikethrough).

It could be worse, I have DirectTV through my building, and while its great that my cable is "free" (I have to pay $20 a month for my HD DVR reciever), I don't get NBCSports or FoxSports. And thats in the second tier.  I'm calling this week to see what its going to cost to get up to the 3rd tier (hopefully just the incremental difference between the two which is $5) cause I want to make sure I'm all set, especially with NBCSports taking over the Premier League.

Naturally I blame this all on Chicos...I kid I kid.

Regardless, I have a hard time seeing how FS1 is going to compete with ESPN as a national sports station if they are on most carriers' 2nd and 3rd tier of sports stations.

Any Comcast Chicago customers know if FS1 will be bumped up to the basic digital package when it converts from speed?  I get pretty much everything I want to watch now (espn, nbcsports, etc) but not what I would consider specialty sports channels like ESPNU, fox soccer, or speed

This is a very simple truth. Whether you need a special sports package or the carrier simply won't have the channel, FS1 isn't going to be able to make the dent they are claiming. If nothing else, they need coverage in the Big East markets, and it sounds like they are certainly lagging in some of them.

The current bidding wars between carriers and content providers is driving me nuts. Especially in Southeastern Wisconsin where cable options are so limited. Yes, I realize there are the dish options, but for many customers it's TWC or bust.

I'm on the residential side, not the commercial or MDU side of the house.  Sounds like you are in a MDU where the whole building is wired and basic service is included in your rent (trust me, you are paying for it).  I'm not sure what the scoop is over with that side of the business, but can dig in for you if you wish.

Quick update: FS1 launched this morning and I get it as an RCN subscriber!

Still not sure what package I have. I get most sports channels but not NBATV, NHLTV, NFLTV, etc.

But anywho its part of my lineup....HD channel 689. So pumped.
