I dreamt of going to Marquette while playing grade school basketball.  It was then and is today one of the top universities for top quality basketball and education.  Since graduation from MU I have continued to follow and support the basketball program no matter where I am in the world.  Where ever I go, I hear people talk about Marquette and its great basketball program.  We are fortunate to have a great coach at Marquette.  I trust he will recruit the players that will help MU maintain its high level of play.  The 2013 recruiting class is an example of Buzz's recruiting effectiveness.  There's no doubt top players will want to come to play for him.  Let's wait and see.

Boy, I must have been the indulgent parent.  When my daughter was looking for a school we made 3 trips to University of Illinois, 2 trips to Augustana, 1 trip to Miami of Ohio, 1 trip to Winona St in Minnesota, and 3 trips to MU.  Fortunately daughter #2 accompanied us on those trips, so it wasn't hard for her sister to convince her to attend MU as well.

My parents took me on trips to Notre Dame, Marquette, and Michigan.

Notre Dame: our guide, was a smarmy little prick who said, I'm not sure how many of you on this trip are even Notre Dame worthy
Michigan: decent trip but way too big for me at the time
Marquette-not an "official", so we asked directions on how to get around. A student was nice enough to show us around for 20 minutes...that student Tom Copa....sold

Edited for my bad spelling.

But then again if I had to do it over again, I would have taken that volleyball scholarship to University of Hawaii...(or was that the bad movie I fell asleep to last night)

Hah. Right.  ::)

By all reports, Looney is a great student and interested in the academic side of Duke.  Can't blame him.

For most athletes I'd agree, the education they get at MU is as good as anyplace else.  It sounds like Looney might be an exception.

I was accepted at both ND and Michigan.   Tour guides at both places were smarmy pricks.    Same with DePauw.     Once I visited MU, it was the school to beat.

You can't understand because your selfish! This is every Marquette fans dream. However, there are better places to go than Marquette or being stuck in Milwaukee. That's just the reality of it.

Looney and Stone will consider National exposure, better education, and greater opportunities elsewhere. It would be unrealistic to expect them to take the hometown discount, so that they could play with each other for something special. It would just be a Milwaukee/Wisconsin story for the most part. It would be like the Fab 5 Hype or what UK has going on next year.

I really hope Buzz lands these two. I will go even further and say that I would love for us to consistently get the top Chicago recruits too. Could you imagine getting a Jahill Oakafor, Jabari Parker, Quincy Miller, etc. on a consistent basis? However, thats just not the reality of it.

I can't understand because I realize that most of the things you list can as easily apply to MU as any of the blue bloods given the right circumstances.  Any team that is a top 5-10 team in the country is going to have plenty of national exposure.  Great players will also always have a chance to get drafted in the NBA regardless of where they go to school.  I'm not sure what greater opportunities they can get than being on a top team with a chance to get drafted in the NBA.  I'm not foolish enough to think that MU is always in this position versus Duke or NC but with this particular collection of talent they can be.   As for education, no top player with NBA potential values that enough to make it their primary driver for choosing a college.  Just doesn't happen.  So not only do I not understand why Looney and Stone wouldn't choose MU, I will go further and say that the way things are lining up I think it is in their rational best interest to both choose MU.

My parents pretty much assumed I was going to Notre Dame. I decided another 4 years of "all boys" education was a no go. MU was a compromise, an incredibly lucky one at that.

Golfed yesterday with a guy who considers himself a sports fan. At one point, he asks me: "Marquette's in Michigan, right?"

And so it goes. Sigh.

UK absolutely sucked last year. But, they still got the media attention as if they were having a record breaking season. Most college basketball fans would probably be able to name drop a few UK players. That goes for UNC too. I would say that is not necessarily the case with MU, as outside of Vander Blue, the causal basketball fan would not know of anyone else. This is the difference in exposure nationally that I am talking about. If MU is not a top 25 team, ESPN and other news networks will not spend one second discussing MU.

It Sucks, but thats ultimately who Crean left for IU.

I am a really strong believer that once Buzz can get the top prospects from Chicago consistently, that MU will be untouchable. And I think it has a high likely hood of happening, given MU's close proximity to Chicago, and its urban campus. However, MU still has work to do, in proving it will get guys to the next level consistently and having Buzz gain the instant recognition and reputation of an Izzo for example. We are very lucky to have Wade from Chicago, and Butler currently playing on the Bulls as proof to these kids that MU will help them achieve there dreams. This will position MU nicely to get local Milwaukee prospects, Chicago, and other top prospects from around the country.

Last year when it was the preseason and we were unranked ESPN scheduled us to be on their family of networks 18 times plus the Big East tourny. So they spend a few seconds discussing Marquette

True, but last year ESPN had a contract with the Big East to show their games. Pretty sure we won't be playing 18 games (or probably even 5 games) on ESPN next year.

The biggest city in the Michigan Upper Peninsula is named Marquette, might be what he meant. Otherwise I have no idea how he wouldn't know what Marquette University is.

He probably knows *what* it is...just not *where* it is.  I mean, if you only casually followed sports would you know schools like Villanova and Seton Hall were?

Funny, I went to Marquette because I just did not want to be stuck in New Jersey. I live in Princeton now.

New nickname: the Marquette Milwaukeeans.  If we can't get a nickname people like, as least get one that's useful.

That's my point. So many freakin' people think we're in Marquette, Michigan.

It's an understandable mistake, but it still burns my bacon!!!

I traveled only 68 miles to go to MU, but the first time I ever set foot on campus was when my parents dropped me off in front of Schroeder Hall. Looking back, more than a little bizarre.

Even more bizzare getting dropped off at a YMCA with two and a half floors of Marquette housing out of 12 or so floors.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

WayOfTheWarrior

I think landing Stone is more of a possibility than Loney just solely based on the fact of Duane was his teammate in high school. Granted I don't know how close they are, but if all goes well we could be witnessing the following video except on a national championship level. (at least I can dream right?)
