Stick a fork in Romney, IF .......

......if he continues to take the Republican Party to task.

Here's why-----In the ad and in the letter circulating in Iowa and NH, Romney wags his finger at the party, portraying Washington Republicans as riddled by scandal and profligate spending. Without naming them, he also distinguishes himself from President Bush and two of his main rivals on the subject of immigration.

Bush never had "proliferate spending"----his deficit which at its height was 3.5 of GNP was a moderate deficit and NOT the result of spending but the result of the initial stages of the his tax cut. The same tax cut that brought us out of recession against very strong headwinds. Now the deficit is at 1% of GNP a very moderate deficit!

Romney has cast himself as a maverick, and mavericks seldom win at politics!

The dollar is weak because Greenspan kept interest rates so low (1% for 3 years) and now with the Fed between the "rock and and the hard place" had to lower rates by 50 basis points to buy time to save the economy from tanking as a result of the mortgage problem (short term fix IMO).

Dollar fluctuations are mainly governed by interest rates----the higher the rates here vs the rest of the world the stronger the dollar----the lower vs the rest of the world the weaker the dollar as money flows toward the higher rates.

Another thing that influences dollar fluctuations are trade deficits which in our case is huge----that could change overnight if we put on tariffs for example on Chinese goods-----but that would start a trade war, which was one of the principle causes of the 1930s depression!

I thought it was greenspan that caused the clinton prosperity, but now it is greenspan that ruined Bush's policies.

Whatever argument works for this admin.

Sounds like Romney is biting off of Arnold by running as a "moderate".

mviale----where has it been said that greenspan ruined "Bush's Policy"? Where?

Just because the dollar is low doesn't mean the policy is bad----a low dollar makes it easier to export---to do business with other countries as our exports are cheaper-----what's wrong with that? Also makes imports more expensive (a defacto tariff)-----what's wrong with that? The risk is that eventually a low dollar will cause inflation----not a slam dunk, but it could, as domestic purveyors raise prices commensurate with the higher import prices!

NCAA----yes Romney is moving to the center as the right doesn't believe him-----but any Republican needs the support of the tight to get the nomination!

Clinton prosperity...internet bubble...irrational exuberance...POP...recession...Clinton gone

I don't think it's a bad strategy Murff.  It may not be a winning strategy, but it will hit home with many folks, especially conservatives.

Conservatives are furious with Bush on spending, illegal immigration and some of the nonsense with Foley, Craig, etc.  That is a winning formula to appeal to those people that are disillusioned with the current Republicans but know Democrats would be even worse (so they just stay at home and don't vote).

77champs, how is what Romney stating a "moderate" position?

mviale

Dollar is weaker due to investment moving elsewhere - they dont see much positive in the US growthwise. With this admin, this is probably wise.

mvaile----I just told you what the main issues are in dollar/currency fluctuations, apparently that means nothing to you----and those issues are interest rates and balance of payment surplus/deficit----the reason money is moving out of the USA to Europe right now is because their interest rates are higher.

You have to be yanking my chain as you can't be that slow!

mviale

The interest rates are higher why? Growth is stronger.

True----but the mortgage/RE issue has slowed growth here----hardly the fault of GWB----to GWB's credit , after inheriting a recession, we've witnessed one of the grestest economic expansions EVER here in the USA since 2002 ----there is a business cycle that no one has ever been able to eliminate----always was, always will be.
