Raised playing surface

Question for anyone who may know. From an engineering standpoint why is it that some venues require an elevated surface?

Visibility. Provides better sight lines for the fans in the stands, especially when the slope is so gradual on the floors of these domes.

This.  The stadiums they do this at are football stadiums that don't have basketball or hockey seating.

I'm surprised the Carrier Dome hasn't gone this route.
