J Wilson
« on: January 27, 2013, 12:24:43 AM »
What may have been lost in what were a number of good performances today was the play of Jamil Wilson.  He had a 8 points, three assists including a beautiful high low feed to DG and a block.  Also after picking up a couple of his typical dumb fouls in the first half he didn't pick up a single foul in the second half.  I had been very critical of JW's play in December but the last couple games he seems to have gotten serious and it makes MU a much better team.  He still has the prettiest jump shot on the team.  If he can carry forward these type of performances MU can be dangerous.

All i can say is that he easily has the talent to start but I'm done questioning the playing time, substitution methods, etc.  Every time I do Buzz proves me wrong.  So I'll just say that hopefully how buzz is handling JW will lead to wonderful things cause his potential is off the charts.  Buzz has so far outdone my expectations for this team its incredible.

I really hope he is our coach for life.

Anderson brings a lot of energy to the game. MU has a history of being a slow starter, so I think a high energy guy like Juan starting is better than starting a laid back player.

J Wil has just scratched the surface of his potential.  My hope is that another year under Buzz will allow his continuing growth into an NBA player.  He truly has all the tools.  His challenge remains mostly cerebral, especially on the defensive end where he simply must stop the useless fouls so he can garner more minutes.  I concur that we seen noticeable improvement in the last handful of games.

I bit like Vander was early in the year, I think both guys thought they had to be 'the man' following DJO's and Jae's departure.  It must be so challenging as a coach to teach a kid to let the game come to him and he'll be more effective.  Van absolutely gets that now; J Wil's getting there.

He has talent to be very special. Buzz said last year he has talent to be one of the all time greats and I agree with that. We obviously have not seen all he can offer and if we do it will be fun to watch.

Also after picking up a couple of his typical dumb fouls in the first half he didn't pick up a single foul in the second half.

I noted that while watching the game. The two fouls he picked up in the first half were him breathing on the opposing players.  Barely made contact with the player. Could have easily been no calls on both instances.

But everyone including him had a nice performance.

i have noticed this as well.  The word is out on JWill amongst the refs.  It is kind of like hoding in the NFL, if you do it enough they will continue to call your # even when you didn't hold.  JWill has set precedent with his prior fouls and now needs to work to get off the refs radar.

I think Jamil has a lack of lateral foot speed, and that is what get's him in trouble.  His guy gets around him and he has to use his hand check...and college refs will call that all the time.

Didn't really notice that at the Providence game, but I'll keep an eye out for it next couple games.

It may not be a "lack of footspeed," as much as it is he is late on his first step.  He has to stop using his hands though.  It is a point of emphasis so they are going to make that call all the time.

I don't even know where to start with this other than to say its utter nonsense. Point of emphasis? Can you fill us in on what else is being emphasized?

For the last couple of years, the NCAA has been emphasizing the hand-check foul out on the perimeter.  Don't know why that is "nonsense" in your eyes.

I think he is out Tim Thomas minus the addiction to weed. Not a bad person but someone that doesn't live up to his potential. He will be a solid starter next year but this is his 4th year in college and he hasn't broken out yet. I think people will be disappointed expected him to suddenly explode.

His offensive skill set is great against a 2-3 zone.  He's generally good with the mid-range jumper either from the baseline or from the foul line area.  This means he can flash baseline to the middle of the zone and the defense has to react to him in both areas.  As we saw on the Gardner play he can also pass out of the zone.  He's generally good with decisions.  He can also screen the top of the zone for Vander and Blue to get one of them rolling down the lane.  With the amount of practice against 2-3's he will only continue to get better and more comfortable in those areas.
