For those that follow Nate Silver--the statistician/pollster/sabermatrician savant over at NYT--he has done a nice little analysis of the basketball strength of the new conference based on Sagarin ratings from the last ten years.

Based on those numbers (and assuming that schools and conferences maintain similar levels of competitiveness--a big assumption), he argues that the new conference will be at least as competitive as any of the major conferences.

Interesting read from a guy who takes numbers and projections pretty seriously: http://fivethirtyeight.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/12/14/a-smart-breakaway-for-big-east-basketball-schools/

I like it when nate silver says things are a good idea, but this may be a tad bit too surface level for my tastes.

i'd be more interested to see him use value-added data to project the future of the conference, but maybe that's not possible with so many variables.  i do like the data that he did provide...an announcement can't come soon enough.

He pretty much always gets it right...

Most that do what Silver does got it as right as him.  He just did it on a bigger stage.

From a pure quality of team perspetive (i.e. not talking money) the only thing the conference will lack is a consistent national champion threat. All of the other major conferences have that.

Not saying the new conference could not have a title but there is no team that will be a consistent threat ala Duke, Kansas, Michigan State, etc.
