I feel like Jae will never cease to amaze me. When we recruited him, I thought "he could be a poor man's Lazar." Instead, he filled that gap and then some. Last year, I thought he could be a solid #2 to DJO, instead he was second to none in the Big East. In summer, I hoped he'd be our second guy drafted, instead he went 20 spots sooner than DJO. And goin into the NBA, I thought "he could develop into a solid role-player."

Watch him become a ROY contender, an All-Star, and a freaking Hall of Famer, with me likely underestimating him every step of the way. And every time he outdoes my wildest dreams for him, I'll be that much happier for him.

he did not enter the game until 2 minutes left in the 3rd.  I will be interested to see how much time he gets during the season.

I traded emails with recruiting guru Eric Bossi after Jae committed. I had watched him play a few games in the JC national tournament and I said to Eric that I thought Jae could be a "poor mans Lazar". Those were my exact words....

Bossi's response?

"Well I don't know about that"....lol


So he didn't even think he would be that good.......talent evaluation is an inexact science.....

I think that is a fair comment,  name me 5 better 6-6 and under power forwards in the last 5 years of college.  To think 2 of them would be at MU would seem like a stretch.

He won't...he is too undersized. He might get a fair shot in Dallas but I see him in the D-League before the season is out. Tell me, who can he defend? I guess if he had a post up game like Adrian Dantley he could stick around because body wise that is who he reminds me of. But he is only a little quicker then A.D. But not by much. NBA speed and pace is different then MU and Big East pace, speed, or size...

Jae was too undersized to play power forward in the Big East, but not only did he do that, he also played a bit of center. Jae was too undersized to be drafted as a power forward in the NBA and not quick enough to be drafted as a SG/SF, yet his name was called early in the second round.

Here's the thing that I didn't get when we first recruited Jae, and that you clearly don't get now. Jae Crowder may be undersized in terms of measureables, but his is incredibly OVERSIZED when it comes to his heart. That kid has more tenacity, puts in more effort, and is more willing to sacrifice himself than just about any player I've ever seen.

That's why we didn't miss Lazar Hayward when he graduated and instead made a deeper NCAA run than any Lazar or the Three Amigos had made in their entire careers. That's why Jae wasn't just the best player on Marquette last year, he was the best player in the Big East. And that's why Jae is going to keep turning all of us doubters into believers. Because when it comes to all those things you can't measure with a ruler, he is absolutely a stone cold assassin.

I love Jae, and I certainly don't want to write him off, but a lot of what brew said about him also was said about Lazar.  And Lazar's career to date has been pretty disappointing.  A great guy...someone who hustles...plays smart...and is extremely coachable.  But that can't make up for physical limitations.  The reason that Matthews has succeeded is not only does he have those same attribute, but he has the "NBA body" to go along with it.  I believe that JFB is going to succeed for similar reasons.

It's a thin line.  Perhaps Jae is just that much quicker, smarter, and stronger than Lazar.  Perhaps he won't be behind Kevin Durant.  Perhaps he gets better coaching.  I hope he succeeds, but the physical limitations are still there.
