Vander - 2nd Round

Slated to go before Tarik Black and Joe Jackson of Memphis, Chane Behanan of Louisville, C.J. Fair of Syracuse, Wally Judge of Rutgers, Keith Appling of Michigan State, and Tim Hardaway Jr. of Michigan.  Not too shabby.

Who do you think has a better shot of being drafted, Wilson or VB.  for me it's a toss up.  I would say by March we will know.  Most of the guys that were drafted or are in the NBA you saw at least flashes of it by there JR year.

Vander better take a seriously leap this year, if he still wants to be in mock drafts next year at this time.  Generally a player has to have at least 1 elite level NBA skill to get drafted - and not sure being a good defender is enough.  There is not a guy in the league I can think of who Vander at this time can legitimately be compared to...

All this said, obviously I'd love for Vander to get drafted and have a successful NBA career...just hope he is really, really, really, working his a$$ to make it happen...cause there's been nothing on court his first 2 years that points toward him being an NBA player...if we are being perfectly candid.

I think JW. Vander, in my view, clearly has NBA athletic ability, but not NBA skills. I don't think that's enough at 6'4", particularly if he hasn't improved greatly with his shot. Would love to see him do it, just haven't seen it yet.

Vander drafted as a shut down, Rajon rondo with a much crimped offensive game? I can buy that.

Otherwise, he's undrafted.

I think your assessment is fair.

But, just for some perspective, you could have said all of the same things about Jae after his Junior year. Vander still has 2 more years, so it's not impossible to believe that he could make a significant jump.

Strength, body control and shooting. These are big areas that need improvement, but they are normally things that come with age and maturity, which is why I think he still has a shot at being a very good college player.

I'd compare Vander to Tony Allen. Both about the same size, lock down defenders, athletic, below average shooters, can make poor decisions with the basketball, contribute in a lot of different ways. Allen has more scoring ability than Vander has shown so far, but that will come with time.

I like that Tony Allen comparison, going to steal it for my own personal gain. Tony Allen got OSU to a final four, so we've got that.

Jamil has to get stronger and tougher if he is going to play on the front line in the NBA.  Or he is going to have to develop a significantly more effective outside shot.

That is a really, really good comparison of where Vander can project.  Not sure he can get there, but we will see.
