Doubt Swanson will ever be a high-minute guy, but there's nothing wrong with adding D1 scholarship level players for free. Buzz has upgraded the roster so we have 13 high-major talents competing for minutes and is making similar upgrades to the walk-ons. Nothing wrong with having another big body to bang a bit in practice.

MerrittsMustache

It really says something about Buzz and the Marquette program when players with D1 scholarships and PT decide to come to MU, pay their own way and ride the pine. That's something you see more often at schools like Kentucky, Duke, UNC, etc because guys want to say, "I played basketball at (fill in the blue blood)." People don't generally think of Marquette as one of those types of programs...yet  ;)

NersEllenson

Did anyone see his statement listed below his recruiting video:

I am currently a freshman at Idaho State University. I played in 19 NCAA Division 1 basketball games last year. I love playing at this level and I am working hard everyday to keep that dream going. Coach O'Brien quit mid way through the season. Due to my unique circumstances I am eligible to play for another team right away. I have been granted a release by ISU to talk with other coaches
"I'm not sure Cadougan would fix the problems on this team. I'm not even convinced he would be better for this team than DeWil is."

I can guarantee that...

unless, of course, Hiroshima happens.

QuoteSources tell me that Idaho State freshman forward Garrett Swason has asked for and been given a release from new head coach Bill Evans to speak with other coaches about transferring.

Swanson is a versatile big man that can score from the perimeter, and had big scoring numbers in high school. On a team that lost their best big man after last season, I thought Swanson would have a chance to have a pretty good role on the team, but things didn't quite work out as planned.

Through early January he was averaging 5.5 PPG and 2.5 RPG (including scoring 15 points and nabbing 7 rebounds of North Dakota), but he reportedly got mono through the second half of the season, and he played less than ten minutes per game over the last six.

Though Swanson never was able to make a big impact every game, his future looked to be solid. He shot 46% from inside the arc this year, and could have been a solid frontcourt player for them, especially if he had been able to bulk up a bit. On a team that will lose three of its top four players, you have to figure he might have competed for a starting spot next year.

So it looks like he was a pretty solid player for ISU for a freshman until getting mono, and you can see the drop off in stats and more DNPs starting in January (his coach also quit on December 19).  Also not sure about a previous post that said he barely played for his high school, as he led his conference in scoring his senior season.  I'd say best case is we can get him to bulk up to play the four and we have some extra depth and some spot minutes if there are injuries.  Pretty nice when your walk-ons are Swanson and Thomas.

Sounds like he was a walk-on last year at ISU with his original coach offering to put him on scholarship for his 2nd year; the new coach didn't want to give him the scholly.

Looks traditional, do we want him?

Hmm.

Interesting.

I don't know if many guys walk-on at a program that far from home without a chance to earn minutes.

Wonder what attracted him to MU.

Especially since Gonzaga is in his home town. Are the Zags going through their own Jesuit Hiroshima themselves?

Someone needs to change their username to "Jesuit Hiroshima."

There is a buzz around our program.

Maybe he read about Hiroshima and knows it's just a matter of time before he's able to get minutes because the BOT wants to be more like UW.

Swanson is a shrewd operator. Verrrrrry shrewd.

Some of you guys turn these threads into a joke

augoman

looks to be the one of the best walkons we've had at MU in years..., if one discounts the guys that paid their own way or had it paid by their baseball team (Anthony Candalino/Chris Crawford).  Great addition.  50% inside the arc!  Hell yes.

If our walk-ons start being semi-legitimate players, who will the student section cheer for?

How'd we sneak him by Mayor Hoiberg at Transfer U?

This should push us past Iowa for the #25 ranked recruiting class for 2012.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

Quote from: muguru
No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.
