You're starting to see a version of this in HS sports.  Seniors, or even juniors, who aren't seen as starters or major contributors are cut for promising sophs or freshman.  Crappy deal.

Maybe I am understating.  Not sure of your era of HS, but back in the day, It was a BIG deal when a sophmore made varsity.  The end of the bench was filled with juniors and seniors glad to support the team.  

Local girls team this year.  3 starters together for 3 years, all setting up a run to State as seniors.  Supporting cast not up to the job....lost in the regional.  Was a better team when there were experienced seniors and juniors supporting them.  

Not arguing this method for college hoops, but for God's sake, let the HS kids have their day.  Plenty of time for Fresh and Soph to contribute later.

That's a bit of a generalization based on nostalgia, don't you think?  Sure it's possible to get sucked in by the raw sexy potential of a younger player (see every baseball trade ever), but sometimes they are better players than those they replace.  Not every junior and senior supporting player would have necessarily provided a state title for this team.

Not saying they would have, but moving the 3 players up as sophomores displaced some seniors that would have enjoyed the experience, and still didn't provide the desired result ( state tourney appearance).

I acknowledge that the genie is out of the bottle, and is not going back in.  Things change.  Life was not perfect.  I guess, more than anything, kids being convinced to specialize in a sport and the near death of the 3 sport athlete has taken some of the fun out of HS sports.  Enough nostlagia.

I think the "death of the 3 sport athlete" is also greatly exaggerated.  Unless they are a high-level prospect in one of those three sports, I think you would generally find that the top athletes in most high schools excel at a multitude of sports.  For instance, when my son played high school basketball, four of the starters on his team lettered in three sports...the other one lettered in two.

I may be guilty of a slight exaggeration, but not a "great" exaggeration.  That's great that your kid's school promotes 3 sport athletes. Situation depends on the coaches and the size of the school.  Bigger schools are more likely to demand specialization.  CMH won the State Tourney in 2010 with quite a few 2 sport athletes and maybe 1 "3 sport".  Even in smaller schools, if you play 3 sports, you are expected to participate in summer leagues.  I know of schools in the area where you are expected to participate in summer basketball while you are playing summer baseball.

I don't want to drag this thread any further off topic.  Was just noting an issue that is becoming part of the deal in NCAA hoops (oversigning), that has come down to HS sports (cutting jrs and srs to play for the future) in a way.
