Big East POY

Kevin Jones and DJO right now seem to be the two leading candidates for Big East POY.  Kevin Jones probably has an edge because of his impressive numbers, 20pts and 11rebs per game.  I think if MU can finish 14-4 and DJO continues to score in the 20s, he has a really good shot to win the award.

WVU continuing their swoon would not hurt either....the matchup in Morgantown will prolly have a degree of significance, ie DJO leads an MU win.

I'm as fanatical as the next guy, but realistically the award should be Jones's award.  Just look at our own SOTG awards, DJO hasn't been able to dominate there.  DJO may not even be the most valuable player on MU.  (See Crowder, J.).  DJO is a very valuable piece of a team that's lucky enough to have a few.  Keven Jones is clearly the most indispensable to his team.

To be fair, DJO is held to a higher standard in the Stud of the Game poll and he seems to be in the running each game. The main thing that I think hurts his chances are the rebounding numbers. I think averaging the double-double makes it much tougher to not give it to him. Although, if WVU nose-dives and we take second in conference, he may have a shot.

+1.  I think it is Jones and rightfully so.  He's a heckuva college player.  

The more interesting question to me is "Will be if both DJO and Crowder make first team all Big East?"  I think the both have a great argument.

A lot of the time, people argue that a dominant player can't be considered for MVP, if his team doesn't do well.  so, I was thinking that since the award is called POY in the Big East, it might even help Jones where he'd be lees likely to get it if it was MVP.

I was thinking about this yesterday. So I looked up former BE player of the year, Ben Hansbrough, just to see what he's up to these days.  Not much.  Mr Pouty complained about lack of playing time on his German team, and quit his Slovenia (or some other Eastern European country) team.  And Jimmy Butler plays on......

If Marquette finishes 2nd or 3rd in the final standings, you'd think DJO would be the favorite but don't rule out someone like Kris Joseph or Hollis Thompson.

Don't let the SOTG tally fool you, DJO has had an SOTG-worthy performance in just about every game.

I do think a lot of it has to do with success of the team.  So as others have mentioned, if MU can capture 2nd in conference, I think there is a very good chance DJO wins.

Agreed, and for the same reason, I think neither gets POY. We simply have way too many good players for one to win that award. Honestly, I could see both getting first team, and possibly Vander and Junior getting honorable mention. We should be pretty well represented in these awards.

It's not just the two though. Two legitimate candidates, but guys like Blue and Wilson grab a lot of boards that keep Jae from being a double-digit rebounder, and I think that if not for having such a wealth of scoring options (Gardner, Blue, Mayo, Wilson could all lead scoring on a given night) DJO would probably be averaging another 3-4 ppg more.

We've got a number of guys that can be the star on a given night, which detracts from overall numbers of the top guys. WVU really is a 3-man team with Jones, Bryant, and Kilicli. That makes it easier for that one guy to distance himself.
