UCONN Weaseling Its Way into the ACC
« on: February 08, 2012, 03:18:02 PM »
Count me as part of the contingent that believes the only reason the ACC hasn't extended an offer to UCONN [publicly] is because of their 2013 post-season ban in MBB.  So what does UCONN do... propose a bunch of watered-down sanctions in the hopes of getting the ban overturned.

Andy Katz writes the following today:

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/7554978/connecticut-huskies-propose-self-imposed-penalties-academic-progress-report

"Those include forfeiting the revenue awarded to the Big East for participating in the 2013 tournament, reducing the number of regular-season games played in the 2012-13 season from 27 to 23, and barring coach Jim Calhoun from meeting off-campus with prospective recruits during the fall 2012 contact period."

What UCONN fails to mention is:

1) If they aren't in the Big East in 2013, they wouldn't have to forfeit anything.
2) They have probably already planned on canceling any OOC games slated against ACC teams in 2013 if they join the conference.
3) Jim Calhoun could be all but retired at this point due to his health.  He won't have any contact in fall 2012 because he won't be the coach anymore.

Granted, it's a conspiracy theory, but UCONN is trying to skate not only punishment but the Big East as well by posing a bunch of meaningless "self-imposed" sanctions to the NCAA.  Good riddance if they are.

Of course, UCONN, we still love you if you do plan on staying in the Big East.
Wow, I'm very concerned for Benny.  Being able to mimic Myron Medcalf's writing so closely implies an oncoming case of dementia.

UCONN may not get an ACC invite because Boston College is dead set against adding them.

UConn's dismal academic performance by the men's BB team is a big factor in the ACC not offering an invitation as well.

This really makes me mad!!

That a school can have absolute bullcrap academic performance and fail a known metric that had known penalties and then appeal to still be able to play in the tourney.

Absolute horsecrap maybe they, as an institution of higher learning with clearly objective requirements by the NCAA, should have had those new policies in place before they were punished in the first place!!

Total bullcrap, enforce afreaking penalty to help other schools understand rules are rules.

Bull crap just like when Indiana appealed to have their scholarship reduction occurr in a year when they were two players short anyway.  translation they were not penalized at all.

So stupid.

What a joke.  These schools with with rudderless ship academeic programs need to be punished.

For those in the Northeast Boston area, does Boston College have the "juice" to not have UCONN enter the ACC?

Does BC even have an athletic program anymore?

If BC isnt the poster boy of why a school should not join a conference that consists of schools completely different than oneselves in a wholly different region then I dont know who is.

I really beleive Pitt, Syracuse, and especially WVU will in 5-10 years will be wondering what the hell they were thinking.

+1

I recall BC continually being plastered across the local sports section in newspapers as well as newscasts here in Connecticut.  Now they are like Voldemort from Harry Potter, "one who's name is not mentioned."  (I can't help it my kids really are into H.P.)

I think it's still mostly because of BC.  Everything else may be additional factors, but if not for BC's opposition the ACC would overlook the rest and grab UConn in a heartbeat (and may still).

I tend to think the APR is a bit of a joke, but I agree that this appeal should not stand.  Especially since there have been other schools of less stature than UConn who were denied similar appeals.

I'll say it again (and it won't have any more effect).  We need to drop the C from NCAA.  Educational institutions and athletics are oil and water.  Athletic scholarships beget these problems.  Marquette and so many other institutions may not make as much revenue without sports, but they will continue on!  UCONN is the perfect example of how much of a joke academic standards for athletics is.  And Susan Herbst... She's protecting her school, but it's so painfully clear what a terrible lie she's telling.

I do not think Uconn will make this years tourney. I also do not think Calhoun will be back for next year. My expectations are that Uconn's two best pro prospects leave after this year and Uconn will have no chance to to make the tourney next year.
