I certainly hope that the rivalry regains its Original 6 history, but the way the City of Chicago abandoned its hockey team really turns off true hockey fans.

I can tell you for sure that Wings fans are looking forward to the pleasant experience of playing the Leafs in the upcoming Winter Classic, because they are diehard hockey fans, understand the game, and more importantly they have respect for the National Anthem.  I don't think hockey fans would have the same pleasant experience if the status-craving FIBs wandered into town, pillaging good moods left and right

1) Chicago didn't abandon its team, the owner alienated an entire city/fanbase with his actions.  Its no wonder that a revival in interest in the team occurred after he died.

2) My god, how can you even see the puck from your high horse?  Your "Hockeytown" came about in the mid 90s from an ad campaign.  Thats not some age old title.  And the Winter Classic at Wrigley as sooo miserable cause of all the Chicago fans.  Enjoy the fact that you have a fantastically run franchise and now your historical rival does as well.  Don't resort to taking shots to try to prove your superiority. And you would complain about Hawks fans cheering through the anthem which is incredibly cool, goosebump-inducing, and liked by most people who aren't Wings fans.

UNC-Duke is so the best college hoops rivalry might as well not even name a second.

College football obviously is Marquette club vs. Pillsbury Bible. Duh!

Where can we get some historical data on Marquette Club Football?  I'd like to put together a composite score for the last 75 games against our biggest rival.

Funny. I was a sophmore when club football came to Marquette. The inagural game was at Marquette High (where we also played intramural football). Beautiful night, big crowd. I think it was U of Detroit (now Detroit Mercy) who beat us like 40-6. I (and just about everyone I knew) never returned to the scene of the crime.

If I recall, 40-6 would have been considered a "close game" and a "moral victory"

Still bitter about Cheli? geez. you chicago fans are too easy...  then again when you have 11 Cups and the longest current playoff streak of all North American pro sports, you're trolling from a very high branch  ;)

just wanted to weigh in on a few things here...  Celtics/Pistons should probably be on your NBA list above Bulls/Cavs, IMO

as far as NHL...  I guess I'm not sure whether you're talking all-time rivalries or present day... but I would say that currently the three best rivalries are Blackhawks/Wings, Capitals/Pens, Rangers/Flyers.  however I believe for there to be a rivalry, you must have fan bases that really respect eachother and hate eachother at the same time.  Red Wings/Avalanche is far and away the most intense NHL rivalry of the past two decades

to be honest, while Chicagoans think there is an intense existing rivalry between they and the Wings, Detroiters downplay the rivalry (mostly because it will never reach the fever pitch of the Avalanche rivalry) and more importantly, the lack of respect that Detroiters have for bandwagon-addict Chicagoans.  It's the same way Cubs fans feel about Brewers fans or the way Michigan fans feel about the MSU rivalry... the flash in the pan success of the Blackhawks is insulting to Detroiters who have embraced the Hockeytown image for years, and for Chicago to just show up out of nowhere and reclaim significance (1 cup wooo!) really does not impress Wings fans... I certainly hope that the rivalry regains its Original 6 history, but the way the City of Chicago abandoned its hockey team really turns off true hockey fans.

Wings fans are all over this Winter Classic matchup.  Though the real favor would be putting the Wings in a conference playing teams they're natural rivals with...Wings/Hawks is historically not even on par with Wings/Bruins, Wings/Habs, Wings/Rangers, and way, way behind Wings/Leafs.  Wings/Hawks, Michigan/MSU, Cubs/Brewers, UNC/NC State, etc. are all similar in that the latter team views it as a rivalry but the former really doesn't care that much.

While we're on the topic of MU football, I think it's worth mentioning Buzz...the first one at MU...

Also a good history lesson for Bears fans.
