‘Jack-in-the-box’ Gardner fills void in the paint

Written by: Mark Strotman

Sophomore Davante Gardner came to Marquette known as “Ox” because of his large frame and rough style of play inside. Following Marquette’s 74-63 win over Louisville, head coach Buzz Williams may have coined a new nickname for the budding star ... Continue reading →

Interesting comment by Pitino that Dieng should have fronted Davante in the post. 1) Maybe Rick could have mentioned that to Dieng during the game rather than throwing his player under the bus; and 2) that would probably be an effective strategy. Would make for difficult entry passes since Davante can't go up and get a lob. Wonder if we'll see more of that going forward.

If teams start to play him that way they may control the pass in to him which would impact the "offensive flow" but I have to assume that his offensive rebounds and put backs would go way up.  That is a big body to try to work around for a rebound if you play him that way.

In addition to impacting offensive rebound positioning, fronting Gardner would make it easier for him to seal his man from helping on dribble drive penetration.

Perhaps Petino should have instructed his players (you know, during the game) to front DG.   ::)  Stay classy, Rick.

"Louisville head coach Rick Pitino said his team did not defend Gardner the way it should have, allowing him to get deep into the paint for easy looks near the basket.

"He's a big body," Pitino said. "You've got to play out in front of him, and Gorgui just played behind him." "
All this talk of rights.  So little talk of responsibilities.

Buzz originally called him a Jack-o-lantern in the 540 post-game show.  Can't find a link on the 540 website though.  I like that better than Jack-in-the-box.
I'm like a turtle, sometimes I get run over by a semi.
