He made the first team Central Coast Section.

From the San Jose Mercury News:

COLLIN CHIVERTON, ARCHBISHOP MITTY

Position: Guard.

Height: 6-5.

Class: Junior.

Chiverton filled a one-dimensional role his sophomore year as an outside shooting threat off the bench. But he changed his game this year with a more aggressive style. Chiverton attacked the basket and become a well-rounded force for a team that reached the Division II state championship game. He averaged 14.0 points and shot 44 percent from the field, 35 percent from three-point range and 76.5 percent from the free-throw line. "He made huge strides in regards to his overall game," Coach Brian Eagleson said. "He was a much more versatile player."

Sorry but those are brutal percentages for HS.  Most good college 3 point shooters shot well in excess of 50% in HS not only overall but from 3 point land as well.  Seems like a fine player but we need much better, remeber these are the guys that will be filling the spots of the 3 amigos in short time.  Those 3 were top 50 recruits.  We need equal to or better to be a a top 1/3 BE team.

Allah, we've now reached the point where we are dismissing recruits based upon a number reported in the newspaper. We always knew the internet would be productive.

Wasn't only James a top 50?  I thought Wes and Jerel were top 100.

He's overshadowed on his high school and AAU team(Oakland Soldiers) but has a vastly improving game, classic wing body type.  He said two weeks ago that at this point, his two favorites are Marquette and Oregon, and that he is very interested in visiting Marquette.  Other big schools are following his progress and waiting to see how he does in AAU this summer to offer him.

Which ever way you want to talk it...that's not good news for MU.

Not at all....MU hasn't offered him either.  MU is one of the big boys waiting to see how he does this summer.  Sure even Georgetown and others are taking a look now.  The kid is excited about Marquette, wants to visit, likes how they play, likes Crean a lot, etc....Marquette and Oregon are his two leaders right now.  If he is good enough to get an offer from Marquette, no reason to believe he wouldn't come to MU.

Awfully negative and pessimistic on your part.  He is there for the teaking.  Keyis MU got in early....yet again.  MU was the first to offer Fabrizious as a Soph....and everyone else is coming in hard after him.

You want a kid to start receiving increased attention....means the kid is doing well.

Recruiting is tough business.....MU has the facilities, budget, success, coach that kids like, etc....MU will be fine.

True. MU hasn't offered him a scholly, but what strategy is best when trying to crack the West Coast? You already lost out on the weather and distance only to have the Big East Conference and reputation to buoy against those two. When the kid is on YOUR radar and the kid says he's HIGH on you, I think that's a pretty good match. Commit a scholarship and see what happens...playing the waiting is fine, but if you've done your homework it should be "'Nuff said."

Multiple things here.  Chieverton as I said has been overshadowed on his high school team and AAU team, and made a big jump from bench one dimensional player to a very nice wing.  A lot of the West Coast wings have been criticized as being a weaker group in 08 class and haven't stood out as much as other years.  He has gone from a mid-major player to in the process of becoming a high major player.

It's not a matter of doing your homework....kids' games can change a great deal in a given year in high school.  Also, MU was looking at other similar style players as well.  Crean knows what he is doing.  If anything he offered too many kids too early in the past, who didn't turn out to be those diamonds in the rough people were hoping for....looks as though Chieverton might become one this time.  Outside of Oakland, NoCal isn't a hotbed for prep hoops.  Based on the way this kid talks, it looks promising for him and MU.

The kid is very high on MU, very excited about visiting and Crean.

The other thing to consider are number of available scholarships for 09.  Who besides the two current juniors will be leaving if any.

We seem to have done that too often in the recent past with players.  Teams don't have the luxury of taking flyers, IMO.  Certainly this team doesn't.   If he is good enough to warrant one of our few 'ships give it to him.  If he isn't, don't.

I beg to differ.

Crean always fails to lock up a recruit and, lo and behold, the spring signing season is upon us and we have one scholly to give to....WHO? First tier ELITE players? Second tier players or perceived "diamonds in the rough"? Or the usual JUCO riff-raff that Crean drops a line to?

We locked up the Three Amigos in the Fall Semester...that's when the power players sign. We need to do the same and stop hedging our bets that there will be someone left in the Spring "leftovers".

Brutal? Really?  44% from the field and 76% from the free throw line would make him one of the best shooters for MU considering how brutal the three amigos are from the field and the line. (exception to Matthews, a pretty good free throw shooter.)

These are 2008 kids.  They can sign in the fall of 2007 like many others in their class.  What are you talking about? These aren't kids being recruited for 2007 class.  BTW Crean has signed, I believe 3 Jucos in 8 seasons, and since when are all juco players riff raff?

This topic is recruiting and Crean has done well in that category so far at MU.  If you want perfect go to a fictious school in a fictious league somehere.

NateDoggMarq

We need to start hitting some big time recruits.

I am sick and tired of seeing Illinois, Indiana, and Purdue with more top 100 recruits listed as either accepting an offer or thinking of.

Harrison

agree with pretty much everything said...I will throw this in too....Why when we will only have 3 scollies to offer are we even offer a wing when we already have one committed?  I pray this is why we have not offered.  These classes of all gurds are killing us.
