Economics of the Bowl System
« on: December 21, 2011, 02:26:11 PM »
My favorite economist, Tyler Cowen (and yes, I have a favorite economist) collaborates to help explain the bowl system and where the money flows.  I found it interesting to read.

Quote
In sum, we have a system where the games are not designed to produce the best on-field matchups, the competitors often lose money but fight fiercely to participate, outsiders and observers complain vehemently, and the organizers amass and waste a great deal of money with little oversight.

Welcome to capitalism, American style. Get back to us when you’ve found a better system.

Practical and moderate approach with libertarian underpinnings - Cowen is a usually a voice of reason in an otherwise shrill ideological environment.
