Backup Small Forward Minutes Jumbled

Written by: Mike Nelson

Many expected redshirt sophomore forward Jamil Wilson to lockdown a starting spot for the No. 16/16 Marquette Golden Eagles (6-0). With the departure of Jimmy Butler, Wilson fit the same build and mold that Butler had exemplified during his three ... Continue reading →

I have not seen any games to date because I am spending the semester abroad but from what I've heard Jamil has played very tentatively at both ends of the floor. Until he puts forth a Juan or Vander like effort his minutes will continue to be limited.

He's putting forth the effort, he's just not looking for his shot.  He's had some brilliant passing and he's pretty active on defense.  He looks a little lost from time-to-time, but I think that he'll get used to playing at game-speed quicker than his competition.  He and Jamail Jones have both shown flashes :)

It's kind of a misleading headline because that really isn't what the story is about.  Not many basketball teams have slotted back up positions for each five.  The way I see it, we generally have two of the three on the floor at most times - Jae, Vander and Jamil.  Jamail has also seen action, but my guess is that those first three will tighten up the rotation on the front line.  It is hard to keep Jamil off the floor because he is so damn athletic and long, plus he can defend and is very smart.  The game will come to him eventually this year and will start the next two.

Like already said, Wilson has just been tenative shooting and finding his shot on offense. Hes been solid passing, rebounding and defensively.

He had a high-low to Crowder from the FT line earlier this year and a rocket to Crowder from the left wing last game that left me drooling.  The guy is as creative a passer as Cadougan, which at 6' 8" is very impressive.  I hope he has the ball in his hands more his junior/senior years.
