Is MU's schedule a top 5 based on preseason expectations.  I understand things will change, but the preseason schedule this year looks great!

It depends on a few factors. More than anything, the non-marquee games. We can pencil Vandy and both UW's into the tourney, and likely top 30 teams. The hope is that 1-2 teams we play in the PJ get to postseason play, even if it's not NCAA berths. Just hope for top-100 RPIs.

Can UW-M or UW-GB challenge for the Horizon League (maybe in a down year for Butler)? Can Northern Colorado get back to the NCAAs (unlikely)? Can Winthrop, Mount St Mary's, and Jacksonville have winning seasons and challenge for tourney bids (all possible)? And can LSU return at least to the middle of the SEC and a NIT spot (very possible)?

If all of those answers are yes, we could have a top-5 SOS. If half of them are yes, we should still be top-20. Either way, this is our most ambitious schedule I can remember. It's a great job by Mike Broeker and Buzz to give us some legitimate tests (including some of those so-called "cupcakes") in the non-con.

Using the previous season's KenPom numbers, this is the best schedule that MU has had under Buzz.

So it's a big paradox, basically...we have to wait until AFTER we play these teams to see how well they finish after they play us in order to figure out our SOS.  This is too much to think about on a Friday.

;D

Yeah, SOS and RPI is never easy to sort at the early part of the season. The bottom line is that the team that will likely be our worst RPI opponent this year is Norfolk State. My expectation for them is that they will be better than at least 5 of the teams we played last year. I've done some online scouting of all our non-con opponents and even "cupcakes" like Mount St. Mary's, Winthrop, Jacksonville, and UW-M could challenge for NCAA berths.

Honestly, the biggest danger of this schedule is NOT teams like Wisconsin, Vanderbilt, and Washington. You can lose to teams like that and it will hurt, but it won't kill you (see Marquette 2010-11). The danger is that even our season opener could be challenging for an NCAA berth by early March.

For more on my schedule thoughts, including capsules of (most of) our non-con opponents, go here: http://www.crackedsidewalks.com/2011/05/evaluating-marquettes-2011-12-non.html

Where does UW-M or UW-GB come from? Just type UWM or UWGB.

Well, if I typw uwm into google, I get....
"University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee"

or, uwgb, I get
"University of Wisconsin - Green Bay"

Stop acting like it's a slight, the schools names actually have hyphens in them.

I did that too, but if you notice behind the name listing on google, eg University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, everything is listed as UWM, not UW-M.  Same with UWGB.  I have never seen it listed with a hyphen in that way, unless they use UW and spell out the city.  Such as UW-Green Bay

Exactly right. Yawn.

As a non-stater, it's easy to confuse UWM with UW-Madison or UW-Milwaukee.
