We moved past this a long time ago, but the Indian logo, and possibly our Warrior nickname might've well been  fodder, nowadays, for the NCAA, if ND's unsuccessful Fighting Souix fight is indicative, to wit:

BISMARCK, N.D. -- The NCAA won't budge on a policy that will penalize the University of North Dakota for keeping its Fighting Sioux athletics nickname, association vice president Bob Williams said Friday.

Williams' statement, made in an email to The Associated Press, and a separate statement posted on the NCAA's website on Friday raised doubts about whether it would be useful for state officials to meet with the NCAA to discuss the issue.

"A meeting is not scheduled, nor will the policy be changed," Williams said in the email.

The policy discourages the use of American Indian-themed mascots, logos and nicknames by member colleges. It considers offensive UND's Fighting Sioux nickname and a logo that features the profile of an American Indian warrior.

BTW, this was a June 17 ESPN article, so I new threaded, but I assume there have been prior threads, on NDakota...This one just reiterates how determined the NCAA is to press home their objections....including by sanctions...Guess its shows we'll never get back to Warriors..I give up.
I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

In a word: yes.

Not if we changed the mascot, otherwise the NCAA would have to come down on the USC Trojans, the Spartans, etc, etc.  Or the dreaded Hawaii Rainbow Warriors

I'd be happy to switch back.  But I just don't see it.  To be honest, I wouldn't wanr to switch back if it was a spartan warrior.

I can't believe no one on this board has brought this topic up till now.

We'll never change back, much as many of us might want it. Not gonna happen, not really worth the continued discussion :(

It's only ok if your enrollment is at Florida State levels or higher, then the NCAA will look the other way.  Sadly, UND doesn't fit the bill.

Nope.  Sorry.  If the all the Sioux tribes would have endorsed the nickname like the Seminole tribe did, it would still be around.  It's a silly reasoning, but an accurate one.

So if you have a name endorsed by a specific tribe then its all good but if you have a name that does not specifically relate to Native Americans but have a generic head of a Native American as your logo then you crossed the line?  I mean our logo was less detailed than the FSU logo but it's somehow different.   Annoying.

But our logo and nickname wasn't banned by the NCAA.  It was banned by MU's Board.  If we would have dropped the native imagery, but kept the nickname, the NCAA would have had no problem with this.  According to this list, there are about 30 schools currently using the Warrior nickname, including NCAA schools like Hawaii and Winona State...even Wisconsin Lutheran uses the nickname and they are just down the street from MU.  (Well, about 70 blocks away.)

I always thought dropping the Golden and adding War as in "War Eagles" makes for a unique team name, unifies old and new, keeps unchanged the current mascot & signage, avoids any lingering Native American issues, and reminds us of the fighting spirit the old Warrior name provided.  This is a much simpler way to change.  Warrior Eagles does this too but I think five syllables is too much.

I'd take a switch back with a different Warrior logo in a heartbeat to keep the name Warriors.  It can be the Jolly Grean Giant for all I care in terms of the logo.

Good point, Funny side note on that website you posted.  It says it was updated on July 7, 2011.  Pretty impressive work right there

Heck, use Joan of Arc - she was a Warrior!  We have her chappel that was rebuilt, brick by brick, so there is identification to that.

As I recall, the reason they gave, publicly, to not go back was that some Native Americans felt there would still be a negative connection with the Warrior name and Native Americans.  The NCAA was never mentioned, again publicly.

This would be brilliant. Win the pr battle AND get the Warrior back.

Wouldn't need to focus on or even explicitly invoke Joan of Arc, although that would make a nice background/context for the name/logo.  Just use the imagery of the warriors of that time:  longswords, shields, armor.

Alas...it'll never happen.

I agree 100 percent. It might even get the lesbians off our backs after the A&S Dean hiring fiasco. I'd take Joan of Arc in a heartbeat. And I think it'd be cool, too.

The Jesuits don't want to make a saint into a mascot. I think if they had their way, all Jesuit schools would have mascots like Bleautaux. Race neutral, gender neutral, species neutral. Can't offend anyone, of course.

FWIW, my son is starting Jesuit high school next year.  Their nickname:  Warriors.  Mascot:  A Native American Warrior.

I'm not saying that this was a factor in our decision to send him to Walsh, but it didn't hurt.

That is awesome!  Go Warriors.  What state are you in?
