2013 Prospect- Russell Woods
« on: March 30, 2011, 02:39:45 PM »
Per The Basketball Report, we are involved in the recruitment of Russell Woods, a 6'7 big man out of Chicago.

http://www.tbrhoops.com/news/2011-12/3-30-11.html

Although it does says he is looking for a program with a history of developing big men.

From the Bullseye guys:

Russell Woods Is A Prospect

The Whitney Young Shootout also allowed us to get a good look at 6'7 class of 2013 post Russell Woods from Leo.  While Woods may still be a bit of a project offensively, there is no doubt in our minds that he is going to be a good one.  Woods has good hands and is therefore solid off the catch in the low post.  He also has good footwork and while he still needs to get stronger in terms of physique, he plays strong, as he gets good post position and is a hard worker.  There is no question that he is one to watch in the 2013 class, which explains why he has already begun to receive widespread D1 interest.

As for other 2013 prospects, Bullseye also has MU showing interest in Jaylon Tate, a 6'1" point guard, and Alvin Ellis, a 6'3" two guard, from De LaSalle in Chicago.

Best way to develop is get some playing time.   We'll have plenty time available for him by 2014.

Doesn't Ousmane count?  We took him from nothing and made him a viable player.

This is the first I've heard of this guy, but is 6'7" really a big man? Is he built like Gardner or something? I know that despite the success DG and Otule we're still looking for more beef in the middle, but adding another 6'7" guy doesn't seem like the "big man" answer we need.

He just finished his sophomore year in High School.  It's not guaranteed, but there is still time for him to grow an inch or two.

I've seen him listed as big as 6'8", and remember, we're talking about a high school sophomore here. Can't assume he's done growing. Add an inch or two ... that's a big man.

And Burke to a greater degree.

As far as developing big men, we don't have a track record because there haven't been big men.  Just guys inserted in that role.

Now with Otule and Gardner there's the start of a record.
Otule, for his limitations - injury and mono-vision (really is that the PC term??) - has developed nicely.
Gardner since his arrival on campus is becoming a much better and physical player (still needs to learn to jump).

Current grades are incomplete, but are trending toward a solid B.

"“I like a school like Pittsburgh that focuses on their big man and making them better instead of a guard-oriented school,” Woods said. 'That’s helping my game because I might not grow, so if I have to play the three they’ll help me with my ball-handling and getting better.' "

It sounds to me like he's saying he doesn't want to get stuck playing inside, if he doesn't grow.
You actually have a degree from Marquette?

No...and after reading many many psosts from people on this board that do...I have to say I'm MUCH better off, if this is the type of "intelligence" a degree from MU gets you. It sure is on full display I will say that.

It's time to get Bo Ellis back in the mix if Benford leaves! ;)

Jeez...I forget how young these kids are. Makes me feel ancient knowing that in a few short years, we'll be cheering for kids that weren't even born in the 20th century  :-[

Marquette has had a lot of big men over the years.  It's only recently that we've really played small.  We need athletic big men now to compete in the BE.

There's plenty of talent coming from Chicago, I hope we keep recruiting guys like Woods so that we keep the MU/Chi connection.  Heck, 2 McDonald's All-Americans came from Chicago this year, but they're both going to play ball in the state of Kentucky.
