That caught my eye in todd's article today. I am a little suprised our all time record against ranked teams is so poor.

So poor?  Give some comparisons.

I think a lot of it depends on where the games are played and what our status was.  In other words, there were times when we were awful but playing Top 25 teams with no chance to win at all.

I'd also be curious how other teams stack up.

Here's the Wisconsin record, as an example   http://grfx.cstv.com/photos/schools/wis/sports/m-baskbl/auto_pdf/2010-11_MBB_Record_Book.pdf

I didn't add it up, but it's on page 108 and 109

I'd like to see our record when we are ranked (probably .500 or a bit better).  Also, I wonder how many of these games occurred when we were ranked.  I would guess less than half.

I guess another way to look at it is that when we played a ranked team we win 40% of the time.  If you think on average you are probably playing the 12th best team in the country, to beat that team 40% of the time is pretty darn good.  I would guess our winning percentage for teams that have played at least 100 games or so would be right up there (maybe 30th nationally or something like that).

APieperFan3

That's a good way to look at it, Dano.

I would be curious to see what our record against ranked opponents is when MU is ranked...as Chicos said, there were times/years where we didn't really stand a chance against ranked opponents.
The "average fan" is an idiot.

Wisconsin 101-258

I'm frankly surprised that Wisconsin's is that good, considering that between 1947 and 1994 they didn't make the NCAA tournament, and only made the NIT a couple of times during that stretch.

This is just a guess but I'd bet that record is probably in the top 25 for (for sure top 50) Division I teams all time against ranked opponents. There are probably very very few teams that have winning records vs. ranked opponents (UNC, UCLA, Duke, Kansas, who else?). As Dano said, winning 40% of games against ranked opponents is anything but poor.

Yeah, but how many un-ranked teams have we lost to?  :P
